SINISTER 1971 Dodge Dart BIG BLOCK
There are some cars that are easy to underestimate, and this 1971 Dodge Dart is definitely one of them. Mopar’s compact cars were far more famous for being grocery-getter basic, but that isn’t to say that the company didn’t slip a few screamers out the door back in the day. However, if one dares to put a monster V8 in a lightweight car like this the performance is going to be impressive. So forget what you think you know about garden-variety Darts and have a look at this tastefully restored Gun Metal gray Vette Killer.
Starting with a lightweight compact Dart body, then you stuff a giant 440 cubic inch V8 making 500+ real horsepower under the hood, and give it all the equipment it will need to launch straight and safe down the drag strip for 11 second runs. The result is an incredibly fast car without a lot of over-stressed components that will leave you worrying about breakage every time you mash the throttle.
Built in 2009, the southern rust free body was fully stripped to bare steel. An original steel duel scoop hood was added to augment the Dart’s appearance, and it was finished in gun metal gray. A correct black “Swinger” stripe was applied on the rear panels, and it fits nicely. The paint is gorgeous! A careful look down both sides of the vehicle reviles no evidence of panel replacement. The front and rear bumpers were also rehomed. The brakes are new and stop this beast in an instant. The nicely painted trunk was also given the full race treatment, with a fuel cell and trunk-mounted gel cell battery for reliable starting and better weight distribution. The underside is immaculate and clean as a whistle.
At the same time, the chrome and stainless were either restored or replaced, and everything is in good condition throughout. The original grille is in superb condition. All new weather stripping was used throughout, so the car seals up nicely.
The big news with this car, however, is the big block V8 under that steel hood. It’s a 1972 vintage 440 block that’s been Decked and bored .030 over with a steel crank, TRW 10.5 Pistons, hays rings, head studs, main studs and fully balanced. The rods have been shot peened and sized, Mopar Performance camshaft P4120661 296/.557. Race ported 906 heads with hardened seats 1.81 Exhaust, 2.14 intake, Roller Rockers and Rocker shafts and a Mopar Performance ignition system. A Torker intake and 850 carburetor handle intake duties, while a set of performance ceramic coated headers manage the exhaust. Add is a complete MSD ignition system including distributer. Just take a look at the pics…..the engine compartment is impressive to say the least!
The transmission is a 1972 race-prepped(B&M) 727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic with a 2500-2800 RPM stall torque converter, and it feeds a rebuilt 8.75-inch rear with 3.73 gears on a limited slip. The rubber is new as well.
The interior is super clean with an original dash with some aftermarket goodies, perfect headliner, nice seats and carpet with a body color painted 6-point bar.
This is an incredible car for the money and certainly couldn’t be built for anywhere near the asking price. Clearly this car isn’t a trailer queen but an extremely respectable driver that will grab some awards at local shows as well as the track! Those seriously interested should contact me via site PM.
Price: $14,750
Please don't contact me unless you are serious about buying the car and have the funds to do so.
