I have been trying to find location of the vin number on my 68 340 block. I have been trying to verify if I have the original block. The numbers that are stamped on the raised pad on the block above the oil pan on passenger side are not legible. Is this the correct spot. Any other ways to tell if I have the original block. I have same question on the 727 as there is no numbers stamped on pad. Thanks

Just checked nothing there. My id stamp on front of block is D space 340 space 2568 with a couple more numbers fading.

They didn't start with the VIN until into 1968, IIRC, so the early ones won't have it.

What is the casting date on the block?

BTW..... Mine is an early 68 September or October build date (can't remember), Inland Shifter car and it has the vin on the block.

It's the model year NOT the cast date that determines where the vin is stamped.

If the 2568 is the assembly date, it's a 1969 model year engine. VIN should be stamped just above the oil pan rail, pass side of block about half way back.

Correct. I only asked about casting date to help him narrow things down.

For example: If the casting date was xx-xx-70 that would rule it out as the original engine.

There is a faintly stamped number on that pan rail side but i cant read it even with dye penetrant. I have always assumed it was not the original block.

If a block has a cast date during 1968, it's more likely to be a 69 model year than a 68 model year. Maybe the first 4 months of the year could be 1968 model year engines. Most stuff after April was likely destined for a 1969 car.

If it's got stampings from the factory on the rail pad it's 69+ model year engine.

So that # on the side should "match" the last 6 # of the vin?

I have a July 67 cast block, out of a 68 GTS here. The VIN on this one is on the front of the block. My 69 has it on the pan rail.

Vin for 68 should be as shown in #2 and #3. If yours is on the front it could be a Canadian thing or maybe very late 68 production.

Behind the drivers side head is the standard location for 68s.
