I am working on doing an engine swap on my 76 dart swinger, it has a slant 6 in it now and im thinking about putting a 360 in. I have a long block assembly on order, and i was wondering what parts if any as far as electrical and cooling i could use off of the slant six. Do I need a new radiator, ignition ect. I would greatly appreciate the help as I am new to all of this. Thanks, nick.

Hi Nick,

there are not many parts you can use from the slant six - the alternator and the starter is the same.

You need another ignition, radiator, exhaust. I think these mid 70´s darts have a straight centerlink under the oil pan, check it out - if so i think you need a another one.

You can use your existing K-member with swap mounts from Schumacher or Transdapt, or you can use a V8 K-Member from a donor car.

go on!

just did it,and still doing it,ask away i can probly tell u what not to do and what u can expect.360duster is right not much u can use, absolute hardest part to get is the transmission kick down linkage,i still dont have one.

Of course you will need a sb distributor but the ecu is the same between the 6 and 8. if you are going automatic you will need a sb tranny, if you are going 4spd you will need a sb bell housing and clutch.

I did this Back in 05 and IMHO these are the steps.
1. Unless you already have disk brakes that is step one to upgrade to them.
2. You need to upgrade the suspension. The /6 suspension is barely adequate for the 6 and unacceptable for a sb. I went to big block torsion bars but many others go even bigger. I also installed XHD leafs out back.
3. The stock 7.25 rear should be replaced with an 8.25 or a 8.75. You can get by for a while on the stock one but you will have to drive as though it was still a 6.
4. The cooling needs to be upgrade to a v8 unit.
5. Now you can do the engine swap. Don't forget the exhaust.

thanks guys, all great things to keep in mind that i did not know. appreciate the help!

Get a Lokar Kickdown cable, easiest way around this.:thumblef:

Believe it or not, you can use your slant's radiator shroud - just flip it over 180 degrees. You will need to trim just a little plastic off the bottom lip to clear the lower radiator hose, but it should fit fine. Did it on my son's slant-to-360 swap in his '74 Duster.

jimwood said the kickdown was hard to get...well maybe a factory one, but if you do like me and many others GET THE LOKAR kickdown cable!! It works great.

I did the same thing.
