Mopar clutch posi? Boom! Not impressed.

I'm going this weekend. Either Saturday or Sunday. Probably Saturday.

Powertrax locker may be an option for you. If you don't mind the knock-knock sound when turning slowly since it's designed for off-road use. Otherwise it seems like a good rearend setup as I've had mine for 2-3 yrs now with lots of burnouts.

Cone, clutch, locker, spool .....in order as far as strength. With a stick car or trans brake running 11's or faster with a strip only car, I would recommend a spool. Ring & pinion, driveshaft, and u-joints will be your next weakest link. Sounds like many of you have good luck with lockers though.

I agree....ran a spool on the street for years and never a problem 8-)

My cone type gave out, it just laid over when goosing it around a turn...almost felt like the tire went flat.

Never had one explode, only lay over and slip..

you just got a bad one, thats all.

Do you mean me?

The cone is fine. Its the clutch unit that shredded. Cone is back in the car now and working fine.

The quarter mile track got rained out so I took the car to the local 1/8 mile. No stellar 60' times at that place, but I could hear both tires spinning, and it didn't give me any issues.

The Ratech reusable 8.75 gaskets don't seem to be altogether reusable. I torqued it to spec and its seeping. Looks like one of the holes is slightly elongated and its losing some fluid through there. They're kind of expensive as a one shot deal, but cleanup is sure easy!

As Moper said - the Cone types are renowned for not holding up as well as the Clutch style under lateral forces of street/circuit driving.

The real question is would there be anything different about a Clutch style or Cone style that a straight line run would exploit?

Nothing AFAIK - similar pinion, gears and case?

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

So the conclusion seems to be that LXguy's misfortune is down to the assembly or manufacturing standard of the hemishere - nothing to do with Clutch or Cone as far as i can see.......

After some new quarter mile passes, I am definitely going to say the clutch type hooks harder. The car came out of the water box with more grip using the clutch type, and I did get the car's best 60 ' time in those 10 passes. Still, its been a 1.59 with the cone type.

Obviously, I have only used one ever and its got to be 40 years old, whereas the clutch type was brand new, so not exactly a scientific experiment.

Hey LXguy, where do you go to race, and how far from Champaign? My Duster's a ways from being ready for a quarter mile pass but I wouldn't even know where to take it if I wanted to. Closest thing I know is the 1/8 mile in Charleston.

get a spool--they drive fine on the street.

or a Dana and be done worrying. Ever.

my 8.75 lasted about a month. It was a fresh rebuild--tore the spider gear out of it.

saved up for a dana with spool---havent touched it/ looked at it in 3 years.
