I just bought a 68 Barracuda notchback and on the instrument cluster in the center is this factory gauge that reads from 0-2.5 and reads on the scales power, economy and so on, what is this gauge for and what runs the gauge

It's a vacuum gauge.. sort of lets you know when you're using lots of gas lol..

I don't know what all years they did "all of what" but there was also a phoney deal (on some?) where a vacuum relay hookup turned on the fender mount turn signal indicator--maybe just the left one? when your vacuum dropped so much

My ol' man taught me to drive by that gauge.......

The higher the reading (to the right) while cruising, the less gas you're using. In a mileage competition, these vacuum gauges are a must have. I think they're pretty cool.........Keeps me in constant connection with the "way" I'm actually driving.....and with gas prices the way they are, learning to drive by that gauge can save some dough between fill-ups.

Yeah, I was prepping new cars at a dealer in the early to mid 70's. Those vacuum switches (not phony BTW) were hooked to the left outside turn signal light indicator mounted on the fender. It let you know when you stepped on the throttle to hard. lol

So, just like with the tach over-rev light the idea was to keep the vacuum light on as much as possible incase you couldn't hear the engine? LOL....

My 75 Scamp has that and it still works.
