how do you test this thing i am trying to get my timing right again and was told that my advance was not working properly any ideas or how to test would help

I'm assuming you want to see if the vacuum pot is good? Hand held vacuum pump. Suck on the tube and see if you can make it move. Or push it in and hold it put finger over tube and release the plunger, see if it stays. See there is always choices, LOL.

If you don't have a vac. pump find a port you can temporary use that goes to manifold vacuum. Usually there's a heater control port or such. You should be able to hook/ unhook the vac. advance from that vacuum port and see about 10* depending on the can, advance / retard as you hook it up/ unhook it.

i tried the sucky thing while motor running and had no effect, just wondering if that is a good test

That wasn't quite what I meant. I thought you had it out and wanted to test the vacuum pot to see if it's working. You can try and push the rod in and put your finger over the vacuum line and let go of the rod. If the diaphragm is good it should hold for a bit.

its not out cause im not sure if this is problem, and it is my only ride so i got to watch what i do but was wondering if i take this thing off can i do this at parts store and be good

The car will run just fine with a bad one, but if you mess with this at the parts store, you are looking for trouble.. Personally, I'd yank out the dist. It's a good time to look over the rest of the dist. for wear and other potential problems.

As I said, find a port on the engine that has manifold vacuum. Temporarily hook the advance to that port and see if the timing advances. Usually you can tell just from the increase in idle speed.

That is......

Expose a manifold vacuum port. Hold your finger over the port and listen to the idle. Hook the vacuum advance can hose to the manifold port and the engine should noticeably speed up.

If no change in idle, the vacuum can is bad.

But make sure the year is correct, their computers are sometimes wrong. Check the length of the arm, before installing. And the # stamped on it.
