Are you sure that charge was for brokerage and just not Duty/taxes?

Canada Post charges only $5 for Brokerage ($8 for Priority Packages) IF they charge you at all. In 14 years I've only had Canada Post charge me once and that was taxes on said item because it wasn't made in the US.

That's exactly right. UPS "brokerage" fees are $40 (unless you buy their costly overnight shipping, in which case the brokerage fee magically disappears). Postal brokerage fees are $5/$8 and often don't get charged at all. You never heard such BS as you get from UPS when asking about this. "Oh, the government sets the brokerage fees, we're obligated to charge the $40, we have no say in the matter"Â…lies.

At least UPS complies with truth-in-advertising laws by painting their trucks BROWN.
