.. but i'm kind of confused. you mentioned using Summit single stage paint and then said you got base and clear coats. I alway thought that single stage paints didn't use a clear coat. did I misunderstand the single stage thing?

Sorry to confuse. Single stage urethane have some clear mixed in with the paint and gives a glossy finish, but still can be cleared with a urethane. I like to clear it anyway to give it some protection especially on a metallic. Better finish and can be wet sanded to fix a scratch.
