The carriers are different. The 2.45 gear set uses it's own carrier and all of the other gear sets use the same carrier, it sounds like you already know this. What year Dakota? If the Dakota is a '97 or newer it will be 29 spline on the side gears so it won't work on the '96 and earlier 27 spline axles which is what yours will be.
