Is anyone using a comp cams # XE284H in your 340? How do you like it? Still streetable? I'd like to hear your opinions.

Just lost a lobe in the 275H, had a nice bubble in the casting at the top of the lobe, COMP said they will warranty it, but the engine got a USED 276 voodoo with 70,000 miles or so instead.....

I have built 318's and 360's with the 284.... It's OK..... Doesn't make the power one would think in a 360 being such a decent duration IMO, the 224* 465 lift solid we replaced it with ran better. (had a lifter with bleeding issues and it would hammer at start up, so I convinced one more guy to run solid........)

It was in an 81 D100 short box, with a 2800ish converter, was streetable, sure, 3.91's worked great too, had a air gap intake, mildly ported J heads, 9.8-1 compression.

If your not totally stuck on comp, but have to have an off the shelf cam, take a gander at the lunati voodoo cams, they run the same on top with a harder hit down low.

Sorry I ain't got a 340 layin' round with one for ya.

No. I'm certinly not stuck on comp cams, in fact my cam in my motor now is Mopar performance 509 , but I'm looking for somthing more.....

What's the rest of your setup? I was using the xe274h for a while and liked it very much. It was in a 4 speed with X heads, 340/416 car. I was able to run a variety of rears between 3.23 to 3.91. I was very happy. It made lots of low end torque and easily put the car into the mid 12's through the 1/4 mile. I made some changes this year and ws thinking of the 284h but went with the xs282s. I don't have it running yet but I'm also interested to know how others liked the 284h.

the 285H will have a broader power band than the .509

the .509 is bigger in the duration and has a narrower centerline for higher rpm/peaky power, its a light switch cam.

as for et's?

hmmm....thats close.

but at the stop light.....i wanna say you'll get over on people more so with the 285 based on the better low end torque and the extra lift still taking you into the r's =HP

and Im figuring in that you may not have the ideal gears/convertor

I ran 4 comp cams in recent years & liked everyone of them, The .284H likes at least 9.5 compression, These are the ETs i got out of them.

73 Swinger, .060 360 with KB190s, 10.2 comp. 915 heads, RPM airgap, 750dp, 2800 stall & 4.56 gears, 284H cam, In full loaded trim PS/PBs at 3700ft. it ran 13.0s hitting the limiter in every gear through the exhaust.

75 Duster, 451 lowdeck, 9.73 comp, M1 intake, 750dp, 4400 stall, 4.10s, stock iron 906s, 284H cam, 10.91 @ 120.56 on a 1.51 60ft. in mine shaft air, race weight was 3200 lbs.

Same 75 duster with 2 changes, Installed a 282s core, had comp. grind it to some specs we picked out over the phone, ground it for a 108*, 543/529, 250/256 @50, dropped on a Weiand TR with 2 600 1850s.
In the heat it ran a 10.87 @ 123.58 on a sorry 1.63 60ft.

71 Swinger that my friend had, stock bottom end 360, Perf. intake, 3310 carb, headers, stock converter & 3.91s, ran it with reg. skinny street tires on stock rallyes, after we ran out the rotton gas & installed a fresh set of plugs through the exhaust & all over the track through 1st. it ran high 13s @ 102-103

Never a flat lobe on any.

Ok heres my setup as of this moment. 71 duster, 340 bored .030 over 10.2 C.R., new eddy aluminum RPM heads ( unported), gear drive setup, 509 M.P. cam, victor intake, 780 CFM Holley, TTI step headers, with cutouts. 4speed, car, with 4:30 gears, and superstock springs.

that or even bigger, like a 250's @ .050 and .575 w/ 1.5 netting around .550 after lash and cut on a 110 would be nice.

His idea of streetable and ours may be different Justin....... :D Just like when he says he has "air conditioning", I think he means that pump thing that fans cold air in the car, not the stinky tree and the windows rolled down like we got... :D

But since we are going "wild", lets go 290* solid roller, 650 lift.........

I have the Comp Cam 280H in my 9 to 1 compression 360 with 1.88 heads, Weiand Stealth hi-rise, Eddy 750 carb and headers. Very streetable combo and pulls hard to 6000rpm.
