My 70 dart 340 has a starter problem. It won't disengage. I can hear it after startup so turn off ignition and the starter continues to grind away. I have to pull a battery cable to stop it. Otherwise it runs fine. really hope it wont require a new starter cause theres headers. Any thoughts out there?

Do your battle to take the starter off, then go with a mini starter, you'll be much happier !!'71 340 Duster drove me nuts !!Take the headers loose, unbolt the motor mount, wiggle like hell, then try to put the new back in !!Swore after that I'd never do headers on a small block A body again !!

So I'm guessing I'll have to drop the header to replace the starter right? Any thought to just replacing the solenoid? Still require you to pull the starter?

If the wires going to the starter are melted together or contacting each other at the terminals, starter will run continuosly.

I had the same problem with our 50 Chrysler. Turned out to be the starter solenoid mounted on the stater. The large steel electro-magnetic plunger would hang up from a weak magnetic field after the solenoid was turned off (magnetic sticking). Solved it by placing a THIN piece of rubber on the end of the plunger (makes a magnetic gap that will not hold the plunger)- PS the 50 Chrysler has a neat way of preventing you from starting a running motor-they ground the starter solenoid through the generator so once the engine is running the generator is no longer ground and the solenoid can't engage!
