Recently rebuilt my 904. Installed A&A street strip rebuild kit and TF-2 Shift kit. Trans ran fine for a while now it doesn't seem to want to start out in first gear. Feels more like third. Also it will not kick down when I floor it even after readjusting the kick down cable several times. It does seem to shift through the gears fine manually. Any Ideas out there. Thanks

not sure you have any damage, if you trans is taking off in 3rd and not down shifting, the Governor is sticking, remove it clean it, make sure the valve (small one ) moves free in the bore.

I just ran across a similar problem in a 727. Turns out it was the aluminum rear support was ruined by the sealing rings on the parking gear (which is also the governor support). If you find the governor looks fine (like mine did), slide the parking gear off and check the support hub. Mine was so grooved it wouldn't slide off! I had to unbolt the support and pull them off together.

Where are you in San Diego? I'm in PB.

John, I'm looking at the governors on your website and wondering if those are for 727 only or if they are the same for 727 and 904. I'm interested in part 22204-56. Figureing since I need to go through the hassel of taking this thing apart I might as well upgrade while I'm at it.

Sticking yes i agree 100% but....... Why ?
Did you flush out the cooler and lines before your install ?
It might be wise just to pull the pan whilst your at it and just have a peek to see if anythings going wrong.
If it worked fine for how ever long ? Then all of a sudden it starts to hang up you might have something breaking up.
Better to have a peek than go through all the work of pulling the tail housing and find that its internal, And besides your under there anyway.

Just my opinion.... GL hope it works out for you.

PS: If theres no metal contamination evident in the pan i would suggest maybe try a cooler line inline filter and a Dacron trans filter. ( better flow with the screen style though ). Put a bit of a flare on the steel line for that inline i've seen them blow off with just clamps without any flare.

It's actually very common for a governor to stick after a rebuild.
Even the pro builders have this happen, because all it takes is a small insignificant flake of crap comming out of cooler lines (even if they were flushed out) or a little peice of aluminum out of a bolt thread.
Most people would freak if they saw what ends up in the pan after a rebuild, so don't sweat it and just flush and reasemble the governor.
As mentioned, I would drop the pan also just to get the first run stuff out of there.
If those cooler lines were not flushed out, then do the pan, the cooler lines AND the gov.

Ok rebuilt the governor and flush the trans. Latest problem no 2-3 upshift in auto or manual shift.

Adjusted the throttle pressure linkage. Took it out for another drive. No change. Actually I think Im wrong about the 2-3 upsift. I didnt really notice it going into second. I think its not shifting out of first. Really need to find someone local to take a look.

Thats a stuck 1-2 shift valve in the valve body.
Did ya take it out and rinse it while moving the shift valves with small screwdriver or seal pick?
Even if the valvebody was rinsed out, the valves must be moved to make sure the original debris that caused the problems in the first place are cleared from the bore sealing surface of the valves.
Most every valve in that valve body has a spring behind it (behind being relative)
But you can move them one way or the other with a small flathead screwdriver.
Move them all back and forth in thier bores and I'd bet you found one that is sticking.
That one will probably be the 1-2 shift valve.

Looks like I pretty much need to drop the VB to do that or is there a trick to doing it without removing it.

You need to see what the actual pressures are. Get a good set of gauges and tap into the various ports to see what the pressures read. You have to follow the test procedure exactly if you want to accurately diagnose the problem. Otherwise you're just wasting your time guessing.

Ok I checked the throttle pressure. It was good. I checked the valve body. Everything checked ok. I have replaced the valve body. Readjusted the bands. Still the same problem.
Driving it I don’t feel a shift from 1-2 at normal speed. When I floor it it winds out to 40mph and that’s it no up shift. Think I blew a few engine gaskets. Oil everywhere. There is no manual up shift ( 1-2, 2-3) but I can down shift into first. Makes me think I’m starting in 2 and running in 2 with no up shift to 3 and if that’s the case where is 1st gear in drive. :banghead:

Any suggestions out there? Trying to not totally lose all the cash I just put into this rebuild.

Don't shoot me for the stupid question but.....did you readjust the Kickdown back to where it was(or close) to before you started adjusting it?? Wish I knew more about it.

What does the governor pressure readings say?
