I have a 74 dart 3 on tree manual with a slant six..I have been told it can bolt directly to a 318 with no problem? is this true or am I hearing stories? How much HP/torque can this trany handle. It is fun to drive dont want to swap it out.

Bell housing and Z-bar will be different. Not sure about the 3 on the tree linkage tho. To answer your strength question they put those 3 speeds as standard equipment behind 340s and 383s.

gona be a busy winter of dumpster diving.
thanks

IMO those 903 transmissions are a POS. If you just putt around with it, it'll work but they won't handle any kind of horsepower. The 230 is a much better 3 speed but it was made for a floor shift car. I'm not sure what you'd need to do to get it to work with your column shift linkage. The 250 3 speed is also better than the 903 but not better than the 230 but at least it was designed for column shift vehicles. The 745 is a pretty good one too but they are not too easy to find anymore.

so short answer go easy rout and get a 4 on the floor?
Im only looking to build up to around 250 hp motor
I do have a lot of time though just going to keep cruzin the six till I have all parts in combo..

The 4 speed conversion isn't much easier but it's a nice strong transmission. If you plan on keeping the column shift, like you originally stated, a 4 speed would be a real interesting project! Modify an old Mercedes column maybe?

for now I am just gona keep rockin the slanty for a while...v8 swap is lookin more and more like a lot of cash in a hurry... Im thinking run the 3 on tree till dead then go for it all with 360 to 4 on floor to bigger rear end..will have to do breaks and shocks in front end too...

thanks for your help
