Since it will be black under the hood I would paint the engine the exact color of the car. I think that would be sharp.

Being I haven't done much in a number of years this may be out of date. Our PPG dealer in town had the ability to inject paint or color (not sure which) in to a spray can. I have painted engines with it and have not ever had issues. We have also sprayed it with a paint gun and have had no problems. Like any good paint job we used a quality primer first.

Don't worry about flake in the engine paint. If they are looking that close they will be trying to pick your car to death anyway. I was thinking we painted an 8N ford tractor engine that we rebuilt red with some left over paint we had mixed and put in a spray can. That would have been in the early 90s and when I sold it in 2003 the engine paint still looked like new. It sat outside all the time and was used hard. We used industrial enamel on the rest of the tractor and it didn't look near as good as the engine when I sold it.

if you have a spray gun just shot regular auto paint... stuff is tuff as nails...

what about aluminum with maybe a black intake/exhaust manifold contrast. I know it sounds kinda goofy, but i saw a guy on moparts do it to his SB, I thought it looked really good, especially if your going with a black engine bay

I didn't say you couldn't buy it because it is readily available everywhere including my local mopar dealer. What I said is the color is off several shades to what the original paint color was. Search through the archives and you will run in to several threads about it with pictures comparing the P4349218 paint to the original color. There are details showing the best match.

Here is just one of the threads.

"Red - Mopar P4349218 (Bright red color)
This "red" color is NOT THE SAME as the "red" that MP sells, nor does commercially available (Krylon, Plasti-Cote) "Chrysler Red" paint match the original Slant-6 red color. NAPA sells an exact match of the slightly orangish red used on some 1960-1969 Slant 6 engines. It is NAPA Farm equipment spray paint, International-Harvester Red, made by Martin Senour.

Late 1960s Poly 318 engines and Slant 6 engines
1964-1969 All 273 engines
1967-1969 LA 318s
1968 340s"

yea I wonder why that is? you would think they could get it right
I think I will use the international harvester red when I repaint my engine
