so I just got my basically stock 318 upgraded with a dual plane edelbrock performer intake and 1406 carb. I'm having a problem that after driving and stopping the car surges a like every second or so for about 20 seconds before settling down. The rpms will increase by about 400 rpms during the serge.

the car runs fairly well beside that but doesnt really sound great, it has a kinda papery sound out the back at idle.

I'm thinking maybe its getting too much fuel and will surge when it ignites the extra fuel. my dwell looks like it could be a bit low, 25, but I did a tune up not long ago...

Any ideas?

dwell looks fine now.... must trouble shoot more...

Its sputtering at low throttle now... after puling the idle screws out a bit. less of the previous problem, but still there

no ideas?

mmmm spent a lot of time on it tonight.

check compression, good...
new plugs
new condensor and cap, would have put new points in but crap the give you at Kragen is all wrong all the time....

shes real happy when I stomp on it. but she dont like idle at all nor light throttle.. seems the idle and cruse circuits are not getting enough fuel or something...

how does one change the fuel supplied to thes circuits on the edelbrock 1406? jets or float? i must find out... I have a new 1406 sitting on my table but would much rather figure whats wrong and fix so i can get the 300$ back for that new carb...

Try these "How to" tech videos on Eddy tweaking!

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/misc/tech_center/install/tech_vids.shtml

BTW; That new eddy 1406 should run right out of the box. We had bought a new one for our 67 and it cleared up alot of problems. I do understand wanting to save the $300 though. Did your new eddy come with a dvd of the videos? Just wondering, they are the same ones on the link above. I found the videos really helpful.
Hope this helps!

Electronic ignition is a great upgrade but ignition is probably not the actual problem unless that is a original and worn out distributer.

i suspect fuel delivery. Make sure that carbs bowl vent is open.

Has a similar problem with a new Edelbrock on my 318 D100. I contacted tech support and they suggested a metering rod and spring change that cured the problem.

use some carb cleaner and check for vacume leaks at the carb base and when the intake meets up with the heads and the vacume advance canister

meh, still working... I dont sense any vaccum leaks with the carb cleaner (dont know why I didnt try this first...) changed my points, no real diff. new rotor.

I pulled my dizzy and completely reset my timing, oldly this seemed to help a bit, the timing seems to effect the stuttering its doing.

I know its hard to help with this crud from afar so thanks...
I'm starting to think its a bad distributor or maybe simply an fuel filter..

symptoms im seeing now are:
jumping from idel to high rpm when I push peddle (not smooth increase)
still stuttering in high rpm before settling
papery noise out back (less now)
a good bit of vibration from distributor

I'll figure out, try another dizzy and through a fuel filter on. bleh bleh bleh

ok, I watched those edelbrock videos the other day. This morn I pulled out one of the idle needles and started the car, it ran well until lunch time. So i just took a air compressor to the idle hole with the needles out as shown in the vid and wow, what an instantaneous change! sounds great now and no stubbles :)

hope it continues that way through tomorrow.
Thanks for the vids dart170 and help FABO!
