The radiator caps go bad. Usually the thin rubber gasket leaks from cracks or hardens. Most shops have a pressure tester for them, though they almost usually test "bad" so gives an easy sell. Sounds like you fixed it.

When my 2.5L K-car burned the head gasket (an endemic problem), I would get a brown oil mousse in the coolant and it would overheat. I usually made it about the 24 mile commute home before it would boil over, and that in the summer in Atlanta. There is a chemical test kit for a head gasket leak. You suck air from the top of the radiator and the blue liquid turns yellow if there are combustion gases. I think mine is from "Cal Customs" or such (bought 15 yrs ago). Most auto tool shops sold it. Check e-bay today.
