Hey guys, still stripping down my 68 dart and ran into a problem with the steering. We unbolted everything and thought the steering pulled out of the steering box, but it only comes out like 2 inches then stops. I noticed in the engine bay that there is a pin in the steering column. Does that pin need to come out for removal? I didn't want to just start banging on it if it wasn't necessary. Thanks for all your help guys. Isn't she a beauty?

Yes, the drive pin must come out. You'll need a punch to drive it out.

You can just pull the guts out of the pot coupling. There is another pin in the "pot" you need to poke out from the inside out (that is what is stoping it) then it will come out.

Well thats good information apparently I did it wrong(though it was easy). I played with it for quite a while until I got frustrated and pulled the tabs back and removed the top off the coupler.

The coupler guts are captive to the top shaft, and pinned to the box with a roll pin. You must drive it out. You can make a punch, get yourself a long 1/4" and 5/15 grade 5 (3 point) bolts Cut off the threads, and grind the end flat.

Or, actually BUY as set of "pin" punches

Yet another guy on the long list of those needing a service manual.

Go here and download your poison. Does not need to be exact year for this kind of work
