Sorry this is not a mopar topic, its my 99 sun fire with the 2200 4 banger.Whats happening is after about 10 minutes of driving my temp goes up very close to the yellow range and pretty much stays there even at high way speeds and in stop and go traffic.Yesterday as it was slowly geting up there we heard coolant being pushed into the over flow tank, its done this a few times now,and when we got home sure enough the tank was full and flowing out the over flow hose on the ground.I have lots of heat,no coolant in the oil,and no white steamy exhaust, also my electric fan does come on as it should. When its as hot as its getting my upper and lower ho sees are not swelled up from pressure.May be its the cap or head gasket or dang.bad timing for sure this Wednesday I have to take Cindy to her eye appointment some 60 miles away.Looks like we may have to take it to a shop, how do they find whats wrong,in the cooling system,i sure don't want to throw parts at this car that's not needed.Thanksss in advance fore ant help.

Sounds like the rad is all gunked up! After it gets hot, run your hand all over the front of the rad to check for temp differences.

Will do that, plan is first trying a new cap. What I did notices the top hose going to the head from the rad was very hot and the lower hose were the stat housing is was warm it should be that way right.

I wouldnt think a cap will help, I agree with YDD that its all plugged or the stat is pooched. Go to Can Tire and buy an infra red thermometer and chk rad for temp differences.

Thanks Steve,am I right if the rad is plug not flowing it will be warm not hot right.

I would pull the thermostat Snake and replace, It could be junk as said here, I have seen rtv sealant plug a thernostat up where some one used this chit on a water pump :banghead: and I bet I drained a hand full of this stringy stuff out of the radiator, This was in a nephews 4 Tec chebby.

WoW $99?I bought one 3 weeks ago for $35 on sale at CT(works great for the race car and track).I,m with Steve here about it being the original anti-freeze(turns acidic)Time for a real good flush, and top up.Change the stat also.Good luck.

Yeah when I worked there I seen them for around $40 on sale, not advertised, on clearout I think.

I would have the coolant tested. You may have a head gasket leak into the cooling system.

This could be why the system is getting over-pressurized so quickly and filling the overflow.

99 sun has a trans cooler on lower right side that is small and pron to brake or plugup also if your running the pink / orange junk flush and go green this will help because the pink/orange stuff is junk and in a short time it will turn to slimy SH-- Thank you GM.

ok update just bought a new cap, went on a 10 mile run hit some stop and go traffic it never puke into the tank and the temp needle stayed in the half way mark on my gauge, problem fix? or is this just a fluke.

I would not even bother , do a pressure test i would say head gasket for sure. 2.2 were notorious for head gaskets.

So why would one day it pukes up and than is fine after the cap change?,if the head gasket was bad it should be the same issue all the time or am I missing something here.

If it's OK now it could have just been a bad cap. Drive and keep an eye on it for a while.

The radiator caps go bad. Usually the thin rubber gasket leaks from cracks or hardens. Most shops have a pressure tester for them, though they almost usually test "bad" so gives an easy sell. Sounds like you fixed it.

When my 2.5L K-car burned the head gasket (an endemic problem), I would get a brown oil mousse in the coolant and it would overheat. I usually made it about the 24 mile commute home before it would boil over, and that in the summer in Atlanta. There is a chemical test kit for a head gasket leak. You suck air from the top of the radiator and the blue liquid turns yellow if there are combustion gases. I think mine is from "Cal Customs" or such (bought 15 yrs ago). Most auto tool shops sold it. Check e-bay today.

could be combination of bad cap and partially plugged rad...new cap gave it better pressure and forced the junk to become disoldged????

I came to post of a similar issue with the wives mini van. Not Mopar. But the question I had was the car will cool to the middle of the guage if we turn on the heater. I replaced the thermostat yesterday, and she just called that it did it again. Any ideas?
