I need to install my door panels, they have not been on since i bought the car 2 years ago. I remember when i took the door panels off of my barracuda that there was plastic behind them. I assume this was to keep them from getting soaked with water that came in from the window. I wasn't sure if it needs plastic on the back, or if it was just something that some one did. Does anyone else use plastic?

Thanks,
Steve

i put plastic back on mine, eventually the moisture will destroy your panels if you do not replace the plastic.

i used plastic from walmart sold for covering stuff when like painting inside a house...

did you use any kind of sealant between the plastic and the door?

Thanks,
Steve

i used the screws holdign the little chrome peice above the door panel to hold the top edge on and then put some double sided mounting tape in various locations but that is it.

ok, i'll give that a shot then. Thanks
Steve

no prob. oh, the plastic i used was thinner than i remember the original plastic being so I used a double layer, just in case...

hope it helps,

Don

When I worked in the rod shop we would always make a full seal with some sort of caulkig or weather stripping putty. I do this on all my cars so that no moisture will destroy the back side of the door pannel after time.

I used heavy duty plastic drop cloth plastic from the local hardware store (it was thickest the they had of several grades) . I then used "Automotive GOOP" clear sealant to stick it to the door. Worked great!

3M spray contact adhesive is pretty easy to use for this as well. Cut your plastic to match the outline of the trim panel and make it a little smaller. spray the adhesive on the back of the plastic and and some on the door surface, make sure to have the windows all the way up to avoid overspray of the glue on the window, slap it on and snap the door panel on - done.

i would not use anything too permanant. There may come a time when you need to get behind the plastic and you wont want to have to recut a peice of plastic.

well i got some 4 mil plastic, and used some caulk that i had, and they turned out pretty good. the caulk got a little bit messy when i put too much on, but it doens't damage any paint and comes right off. This is the first time i have had the front door panels on the car since i bought it 23 monthes ago and i'm very happy with the way the interior is looking right now. I repainted the interor of the doors and, got a grant steering wheel and now put the recondtiioned door panels on. Now i just need to get the headliner installed, my dash cap on, and get the front seats covered, then the interior will pretty much be done.

This also keeps cold or hot air and dust from entering the inside of your car.
I have road in a car with the plastic not put back in and in the winter you could feel allot of cold air coming in.

hmm, didn't think about it keeping air out too. Definatly won't be driving it in the winter, but i'm sure it'll be out sometime when its colder than i want it to be. Gotta get the heater fixed too...
