'67 Valiant: Rebirth

-
So I found this guide for measuring bolt circles. Since I don't have their special bolt-circle measuring tool I improvised...Borrowed a wood ruler from my girlfriend and zeroed my calipers to the depth of the ruler...Laid the ruler across two lugs and rolled the calipers out to the center of the stud across from the ruler...4.5", almost directly on the nose. Perfect. I also measured the studs and they're 1/2" diameter, so the front-end has definitely been swapped out for the later, big-bolt-pattern setup.

Now I need to figure out what k-member is in the car and what else will have to change if it's the biscuit-mount k-member. Shouldn't be too bad; I'll just have to look at the new k-member when it arrives.

So...Yeah. Haven't updated any of this in a while.

I worked on the car for a few hours today. It started out looking somewhat like this:

and ended up looking like this:

Next up: the fenders.

Got the trunk lid open. F'in vandals...It bugs me to see that bashed-up, rust-free decklid. :(

Over the past few months I obtained a 489-case 8-3/4" a-body rear and a set of Ford Mustang caliper mounts for the rear axle. I also have a '73+ v8 k-member.

From this pic it looks like I have the earlier lower control arms and swaybar/k-member setup, but I've got the '73+ disc brakes, from some digging I've done earlier. I guess someone swapped UCAs and lower ball joints to accomplish this. Does this look right?

No confirmation on my swaybar/brake idea? :(

Splash shields and fenders came off tonight, thanks to the tip about the splash shields from 340Dart on the web chat. Only took something like two and a half hours...A pro I am most certainly not, but this is my first go at tearing a car down this far.

Valiant69er: cool stuff. You guys are off to a much better start---with a much nicer starting point---than I am. :)

After a bit of a break due to circumstances beyond my control, I'm working on the Valiant again, usually after my girlfriend goes to bed. :)

The rest of the front sheetmetal is off. Master cylinder is drained, lines disconnected from the master cylinder and the front brakes, front brake calipers and brackets are off. Rotors seem to be held on quite nicely, but I'll get them off. :) Now the only thing holding the k-member/suspension in the car is bolts.

Didn't see a pic of the rear, but don't give up on your rust-free deck lid. New metal can be welded in to save it. I remember seeing after market patch panels to fix that area for more popular cars. (read GM here) Your original K was cut for oil pan clearance so your car may have a drag racing history, or the start of one but never accomplished. The gap in the firewall was definitely cut, not torn. That too can easily be welded up and ground so it disappears.

Yeah, you have 73-76 front discs w/ matching UCA. LCA and sway bar are still 67-72. A 73-76 sway bar goes THROUGH the K and the bushings bolt to channels held on by screws and nuts. Also, the motor mounts will now be spool type, not 67-72 biscuit type.

Otherwise, keep at it.

KosmicKuda: thanks for confirming my suspicions about the front-end setup.

I'm not going to pitch the decklid. I may see about fixing it...

good luck with the build.I am building one myself. I have the grille parts if you need them along with a nice dash cluster. I changed my grille out to a sharkstooth.

heres the car.

Can you post pics of your '67 with the sharktooth grill? I'd love to see how that looks. Guessing you had to go to a '69+ style hood?

Looks great. Nice work. I have some '67 grills...What do you want for yours? I'm thinking about keeping a set original and then another set with the mesh area blacked out...

I really want to sell everything as a package deal.filler panel, grille, center piece with emblem, upper plate, latch support and latch.$200 for everything.

I'm shocked...I was afraid of my k-member bolts. I've heard horror stories of them breaking and so on...But I managed to break all four of them loose with just a BFR. Now I'm just waiting on someone to come give me a hand while the k-member gets dropped.

She's coming along nice. I picked up another Valiant myself. I still have some parts left if your looking for anything else. Shoot me a PM
