Well, I can see them. Not as well as I could when I was stationed in Alaska for two years, but I can still see them. They started here at 11:45 pm and they are still out. I never thought it was possible to see them in the lower 48.
 
I used to see them every summer in Northern Wisconsin when I was a kid and it's quite the sight. I've read that there is a high amount of solar flare activity, coronal mass ejections to be more precise. All this energy is charging the ionsphere which allows us to see the aurora borealis at more Southern latitudes.
