I have a 1968 Dodge Dart GTS, 383 4-speed. I purchased and rebuilt the correct Carter AVS 4426S carburetor. However, it did not have the dsahpot or the choke vacuum diaphragm.

First, what are their functions?

Second, can the carb/engine operate properly without one or both of these parts?

Any help/education is appreciated.

Thanks,
Al in Maine

Yes, it can operate without it, you can get them new, it's function is to delay the secondary opening.

The dash-pot is like a cushion when you let off the gas. Just keeps things from snapping shut (may be more to it than that but you can run the carb without it just fine).

The choke vacuum diaphragm on the other hand is a different story.

You will probably need to plug a port or two and wire your choke open (or somehow disable the choke mechanism).

I don't have my AVS in front of me but I think I got that mostly right.

The name of the part for the choke is usually called a "Choke Pull Off", and it's function is to partially open the choke butterfly once the engine starts. Without it, the choke butterfly will remain fully closed and the engine will stall. Once the engine is warmed up, the choke will be fully open and this part will then be "along for the ride" until the next cold start.
They should still be available from a local auto parts store.

Is it possible that these Choke Pull Offs are interchangeable? There seems to be tons of them for a 68-71 383 2bbl.

I believe most any pull-off for an era-correct AVS will work on yours. 2bbl ones are different and will not swap on.

Here's a 1968-72 CARTER AVS / AFB CHOKE PULL OFF FOR ALL MOPAR 4 BARRELS......

I just looked in my box-O-carb parts, but I don't have a pull-off for you. Call a NAPA store later and see if they can get one for you. I would imagine that part would have several applications for AVS and AFB.

If you strike out, call a Corvette restoration parts supplier as they may have them also. Many C-1 Vettes used Carter carbs. Ecklers, Mid America, ZIP etc. They almost always have pictures of their parts on line so compare to the picture 65 Val posted.
The picture 65Val posted is the one that was on my 69 Dart 340 with AVS.
