Well,i decided to put new valve seals on my /6 hoping it would stop smoking so I can drive it until the V8 swap, but after installing them,I noticed it still smoked.I took the valve cover off and noticed the damn things are riding the valves and unseating them.Is there a special kind of valve seal to use?I used 2 diff kinds, umbrella ones for the intakes and some shorter ones for exhaust.

my seals did the same thing for probably a 100 miles or so and they finally started slowly staying down.. i thought the same thing tho, it seemed stupid for them to do that

It's been a while since I played withthe slant six (but will be getting reaquanted here shortly)but there are Umbrella Seals (most common) and then there were ones (can't remember the technical name)thatwere clamped onto the cast valve guide area !!! I believe it was more geared towards racing engines, but I never had any problems with them !!!

OK,the good seals are Viton silicone !! The valve pedestals need to be groung to make then work, but you won't have the problem you do with the stock umbrella seals !!

Yeah, we used to call them PC seals (Perfect Circle maybe? can't remember why) They fit tight on the guide and didn't ride the valve. You needed them for race engines and they were an nice upgrade for street engines too. Some applications you needed to machine the outer diameter of the guide but most of the time we could find one that fit without doing that. The regular umbrella seals should work fine in most apps but if you have worn guides, you'll need the PC seals to even have a chance of cutting down the oil burning.

..........The seals do ride up and down with the stems, there supposed too.......the seals works just like the name implies [ umbrella] the oil runs over the seal away from the guide........did u use the plastic applicator or just force the seal over the stem..........kim...........

May be the guides are needing to be changed out :eek:ops:

just thinking out loud

To continue the analogy, an umbrella is fine in the rain but not much good in a hurricane!
