Have a guy on another board with a cool 33 Plymouth looking for a new set of 391 gears for a 741 case.

I don't think they are available, so thought I would put it out here.

Does anyone have a good 391 ring & pinion for a 741 case for sale?

he has a whine that he wants to correct. Not sure if he has factory set or aftermarket in there now

my suggestion to him was to get a 742 or 489 case, but he isn't wanting to spend the money for a complete new 3rd member and has an overdrive trans and likes the 391 gear

please send me a PM

when you ask for gears, do you mean the ring and pinion or a complete 3rd members. Many people use the term interchangable.

i should have ring and pinion

he sent me a message today that he signed up here, maybe he will chime in

I'm probably with Kim on this one. If they are whining now then the wear pattern/lash is not correct and already established. If ypu can get them cheap you could set them correctly and hope for the best. They could also be Richmonds which I hear many times are hare to set up without the whine.

you can peice a new 3rd member together for pretty cheap... which is what you gonna do when you get a set of used 3.91's and they still whine lol... been there...

you can get a 742 or 489 case for under 100 bucks, if you lucky you can get a suregrip al a carte for 200-450, bearing kit is about 120, new gears will be around 200...

call up doctordiff (Cass), he is a really great guy...

.............Save ur self the headache of another set of whining gears........out of about 20 or so sets i've had 19 have a whine in them u cant get out........and as far as putting some in from another case ur asking for a whine.......these were used gears.......the factory set up was out of spec by more than just alittle.......get new gears and case if u have to and get someone u trust to set them up that u know will do an excellent job...............kim.....

He is trying to get by "cheap" on that nice rig ????

Ben Franklin had a saying about that, what was it, "penny .....

Not trying to get away cheap, (chignikred), just trying to find the same ratio new. But now I see why most go with Ford or Chevy. I will get a different ratio new from Motive Gear.

I didn't read anywhere that he was trying to get off cheap!! I read that he was looking for a new 3:91 ring and pinion gear for a 741 case. He didn't say used or cheap, but he did say that he thought they were not available new for the 741 case and he was checking to see if anyone knew if they were or not. He also stated that he was looking for a new set and thought he would ask here!!

I don't think they are available new for a 741 case, but if anybody can set you in the right direction it would be Randy's Ring and Pinion, Dr. Diff or DTS (Drive Train Specialists). I would check with these 3 companies to see whats available before looking elsewhere. Might save you time anyway!!! Geof

Do you think installation of used gears will cause it to whine again? Is that because the old gearsets had worn into an out of adjustment pattern? Is this less of a problem with higher gears? I've installed two sets of used 3.23s and neither whined. Did I just get lucky or is the problem more prevalent in lower gearsets? I did once install a set of new 4.10s that I never could get the whine out of completely so I'm curious......
