There is an early and late size converter pilot button. The early button is 1.55" o.d. and the late is 1.81" o.d. so there's a big diff. Is the crank pilot hole good and clean? I ran into one once that wouldn't pull in and it was because of some light rust on the crank i.d. ... I used a die grinder with a small diameter wire wheel to clean it out and then it went right in. You might have a look at that and also verify the crank i.d. is correct for the converter.
