$875 too high?

A friend is looking to buy this '66 Valiant.

He wants me to go take a look at it. But, just from the looks of it in the ad, I'm thinking $875 is a bit high. I'm not too keen on pricing but, considering I got my 64 Dart for $100 maybe I'm being cheap. However, the market is a bit soft and I've seen better cars go for way too cheap. Any insight on "fair" pricing so that I may negotiate appropriately. He's trusting my judgment on this and I don't want either the buyer or seller to get a raw deal.
 
Not sure by you but that car would pay at least 400 across the scales of the crusher. Due to scrap prices these are being crushed by people looking to turn a fast buck and others not wanting to pay more than 100 that days gone by had paid. Hopefully you can get it rather than someone crushing it.
 
Looks like a $500.00 car to me, and I would be happier to get it for less than that!! JMO, Geof
 
These cars are getting scarcer and older every year...$875 for a car that runs good isn't too much IMO, I bet the seller would take $750...

if he put that in the ad, it just screams "LOW BALL ME!"

$450 to $650 in my opinion

if the seller didnt put "not a nice car" in the ad I would go $500 to $1000
 
What WHAT come up north with that and see what you get I'll bet 1000.00 Ive seen junk sale up here for 2500.00 all day long no motor or trans you no the chebee guys buy em and flip them with adds that say just need a HEIM to put in?????
 
Looks like a fair price for a roadworthy California car.

You guys in the east see so many rust buckets it colors your judgement. If that car has spent it's life in CA it should be pretty solid. That may well be the original paint.

I paid $600.00 for my 63 Valiant Signet..... in 1980. $875 is a ridiculously low price, even accounting for 30 years of inflation.

Grab it. CA car prices are outrageous anyway. Be glad the seller hasn't discovered the "classic" value of the car and isn't asking $3000.

At a Mopar show a couple of years ago a clapped out 63 convertible with rusted out floors and primer seemingly sprayed with the windows open was being offered for just that: $3000.00. Even the sorriest junk was well over $1000.

There are internet old car value guides: I think you'll find solid "not nice" cars like this going for far more than $875.00
 
NADA price guide for 65 Valiant 100 4 door, retail : $2085 for lowest condition example in Van Nuys CA area. As I said: grab it. It's a bargain.
 
I love when the guys back east talk about cars but if you notice when they go to sell them they always put in calif,ariz no rust car. I think it is worth it if it is rust free I have a 63 dart rustfree and would not even consider that price. If it where by me I would buy it. Some of the prices I have seen mentioned here are way to low, try to find one. The parts on this car are worth more than the asking price.
 
Thanks, Don't have much knowledge on fair market pricing considering most of the cars I've gotten have been on the "Bro" pricing system. I won't try to talk him down unless I find some major mechanical issues. My friend wants to use it as a short distance driver. He has a '71 Charger as his daily now and wants to start a major overhaul. Needs a trusty ride to and from work (5 miles).

Exactly which parts on this car are worth more than the asking price?? None of the suspension, driveline, or 4 door interior parts will fetch hardly any money. That leaves the front fenders..OK, they are worth something if they are in decent shape, the hood ..Ok, that too. The grilles look to be junk, the taillights may be the same, the drivers side air box maybe and the dash pad if it isn't trashed, but I don't see the $$$!!

I have owned/do own a number of 66 Valiants and Barracudas and I am pretty versed on the pricing of components from these cars. If you are buying this car to part out yes you may make your money back, but does that pay for all your time and effort to strip, clean, list, pack and ship items?? I doubt it!! You'd be better off leaving it just the way it is and driving it like the OP's friend is planning to do. QWhich brings me back to my guesstimate... it's a $500.00 dollar car almost everywhere but in the inflated west!!JMO, Geof
 
Put some oil in it a drive it another 20 years. I bet it still has another 50,000 nasty miles in her. No ones gonna steal it. Beats walking or a bus pass, tint the windows and sleep in it! Poor teenager would love it as a first car and what better way to teach a young man/lady a life skill like mechanics in a car where every rebuildable part in the motor is about 20 bucks at autozone? (starter, water pump, alternator, oil pump, distributor,etc) a little exagerated but almost true. And your leadfoot kid wont be dragging it any time soon...just keep a pay as you go cell phone in a sealed jar in the trunk for that "special" moment when Dr. Hook is needed...and a AAA card.

Go kick the tires - see what falls off. Worst that can happen is the seller won't budge, and you tell him to keep it.
 
go look at it -- if this is a daily driver car-- then the price is not out of line, check the rust & see how the car runs / drive the car-- 9" brakes & all ----15 minutes- you'll have you idea of worth-- judging by the ad-- the car is priced correctly-- don't worry about the seller-- just make a fair offer & move on.
This depends on what your friend is wanting.

Ad states fair shape...If that was an east coast car we would call that a cruiser or daily driver and easy resto. for a show car....You fellas on the left coast are spolied. I'm considering looking for a 4 door /6 Mopar as car to run some errands in...11mpg in the city from my truck is tooo much $$$.
 
My buddy is having difficulty finding time to go look at it (kids). I may try tomorrow afternoon. What I do know, is that it has a leaky radiator, and no battery. I happen to have a good battery laying around and a good radiator shop. Hopefully, my buddy gets it before someone else does.

The inflated west well where do you find rust free cars and parts out west. Like I said the car is worth it and I have been dealing in mopars for over 40 years. So say what you want the car is worth it and I have proof of it and I bet most of the cars and parts you have bought have been west coast cars, I know I lived in Ohio for over 40 years.The whole front clip will fit a barracuda.
 
$700. AAA hooking it up tomorrow. Not great but a decent driver. Carb needs rebuild. Radiator needs re-core but has good compression and is otherwise a good runner. Excited too have another early A-body in our circle.
