My son recently made a new freind when the gentlemen stopped to look at my boy's 73 duster when he was gasing up. We later found out he managed a junk yard when he called to offer my son a free 1977 360 and 727 trans!! It came out of a RV. He said he was impressed with his politeness and how proud he was of his car. (Me very proud of my boy for that!!) OK, so now we got a project, cool, only I'm a weekend warrior at best and have just enough knowledge to be dangerous! I got a stand and I'm tearing down now and it's down to block, crank, cam and pistons. I'm now am trying to under stand how the motor works as I rotate around an watch what happens. I know the firing order of the sm block mopar but i'm confussed about where TDC is. When the #1 piston is at the top of the block, there are 2 different cam locations (180 deg and 360 deg.) In one possition the cam lobes are between the opening of the exaust and intake lifters. In the other the cam lobes are both rotated down out of sight. I already took out the distridutor out so I dont know witch is TDC. Maybe i'm way off on the hole thing!? This is probably just the start of all my ?'s but I really want to do this with my son. Can't be that hard, or can it??:-k

Thanks for reading. Any help and or advice is greatly appreciated!! (Prayers are good to!!) Benson and Dyllon

Hi, great score, being polite wins again! Darned good life lesson right there. TDC is when#1 piston is at the top of compression stroke, so both valves should be closed.

Sweet! Congrats to you and your son. Sounds like you got a good kid there. Good luck on the build.

Love the demon convertion. My 13 yr old girl is thinkin she wants a demon and I was wondering how to pull that off!

Very cool. The trans may need a tailhousing /output shaft change, but that's not hard if rebuilding it. If it's got a slip yoke you may be in good shape!

Thanks to everyone. Yes my kids are great. All 3 of them make me proud!!

As for my ?, the piston comes to the top of the block twice during the rotation cycle. Witch time is the firing cycle. the lifters are down in both positions but in one cycle the cam is right between the intake and the exaust lifts. the other cycle the cam lobes are facing down away from the lifters.

You must of have done something right when raising that boy.So here's your "ataboy".And sweet score now remind your son to pay it forward some time we need to keep a good thing going.

when the 2 dots come together[ :] you will be on the compression stroke of #1 cyl. Piston will be all the way up, Dot will be at 6 oclock on cam and 12 olclock on crank [:] hope that helps. Congrats on the build.

Crank dot at 12, cam dot at 6 o'clock, is #6 firing in every case I've ever had.

I was just going to say that, the one I had the drive shaft bolted to the trans.....

You need to remember the 4 cycle engine has 720° of crank rotation. There's Intake, Compression, Power, and Exhaust. So the piston is at TDC twice. Once is the end of the exhaust stroke. Once is the end of the compression stoke. If you watch the cam, the first lobe at the front of the block is cylinder 1, exh lobe. The second is the #2 exh valve. The 3rd is the #1 intake lobe. So watch as the piston comes up. If the pointed part of the 1st cam lobe is moving from pointing up to down when the piston is coming up, that's the exhasut stroke. The intake lobe will be coming around and heading "up" as the piston moves down after the exh stroke. When the piston beings to rise again, neither point of the lobes for that cylinder will be "up". Meaning the cylinder is sealed. That's compression stroke.

THANK YOU ALL. I think I got it now. As this thing goes along I'm sure to have more ?'s!!
No I'm not the best parent in the world, just the dad in there lives. You do the best you can and pray that they are listening, and once in a while something happens and you know they are.
