Only the government would think a tax on winnings is a good thing. Thanks God the Canadian government does not tax lottery winnings! Not sure if they tax prizes like cars,but I'd think not if they dont tax a cash prize.

There is no tax on Canadian Prizes. Also if a Canadian wins a prize or money in the US, say Vegas, they will automatically be taxes on their earnings. BUT you can then hire a company (or do it yourself if you're good with paperwork) to get those taxes back. Problem is you have to pay the taxes right then and there first.

Years ago a Canadian couple were on The Price is Right and won a bunch of prizes and even a brand new car. The problem was they had to sell everything at a major discount due to being in the US on vacation. They couldn't afford to pay the taxes right then and there to bring the items to Canada (then apply to have the taxes refunded) and couldn't wait around to sell the items for decent prices.
