Looking at a 67 dart with a 273 hipo engine,is that a good engine, can it be modified some?
Thanks

It is a good little engine. Most folks here prefer the larger LA series engine, the hp/dollar ratio is better with more cubic inches. The factory spec Hi-Po 273 is rated at 235 HP which is pretty good for the day. I built mine because it is original to a low-mileage all original car. For a real go-fast, you are going to want a 318/340/360 LA build. There are a few of us on the board who have built the 273 with success. It boils down to what you want the car to be. Search the small block tech section of the board and there will be reams of information on your question.
Best of luck with your decision, Rat

That's what I have - just changed the motor and 904 to a 360 with 2400 stall and a different 904 -- smokes em in 1st gear. Don't think whoever rebuilt my 273 HiPo did
it correctly. -- only had 110psi on all cylinders when did a compression check -- was
told they put 60 over pistons in it on rebuild but think they might have used regular 273
ones, not the 10.5 ones the hiPo has. You'll have to send me pics - I'm down in Mass.

I read an article, where there was an engine build off where the winner was based on the largest % of HP gains, and it was a team that built a 273. Lotsa potential with that engine.

Built mine up a bit cause I wanted to perserve an original look. Its a matter of preference and how fast do you want to go and how much $$$ you got to spend. My 273 is est. 285hp+ with 4.10 rear...somewhere in the high 13.'s if you can race a 4 speed properly...more like 15.'s with me banging gears.....lolol
If you want some specs. PM me.

Yes, everything can be modified and everything is interchangeable with the 318/340! As others have said, it depends how fast is "fast" in your book or "acceptably fast". I like 273 hipo's, I just question how effective that intake manifold is, compared to a real aluminum new dual plane. There's nothing like an engine that loves to revvvvv!! The only problem I think you might have to confront is buying the special high compression pistons for it, if you ever decide to rebuild it.
