Im in the process of rebuilding a 318. The heads I have on it have been shaved. As I was torquing the rocker shafts bolt one of them broke. :eek:ops:maybe 3/4 of an inch is left in the head. Is it possible to fix without a new head? where can i buy a replacement bolt? :banghead::banghead:

can you get visegrips on it to get it out? Unless the threads in the head are buggered up, you should be able to get it out and the head should be fine.

Drill it out and remove with an easy out . You can get them at sears, harbor freight, or anywhere that sells tools. You will need to make sure shavings do not get down in the engine if you do it while the head is installed on the block. If part of the bolt is sticking up, you may be able to cut a slot in the broken bolt and remove with a screw driver. Take one of the other bolts to the hardware store and get a replacement. I would use at least a grade 8 bolt.

I dont believe so. I think it broke inside the head.

Dam! I wish I lived closer to you removing broken bolts or studs is one of my specialties.
Post a picture on I will help you out, getting a replacement bolt is not a problem, skip down to your local auto parts store.

Watch out for the torque. Some of the online sources have it wrong. It should be about 18-20 lb ft. I've seen some sources say 30-35 and that's bad news on a SB.

If you can get a small chisel in the space and knock it around it should come out.

Thanks everyone! doesnt make me feel so stressed. haha. But I only had the torque set for 20...I was using the original bolts. Maybe this is a sign to buy replacements.

Replace all the bolts with grade 8 bolts. I've run into this many times and it's PITA, but not catastrophic. Also on Ebay, look at item #320822782059. It is a set of the grade 8 bolts and they are 17.70, plus 7.00 shipping. I hope this helps.
