my question....are reproduction fender tags illegal in any states? not vin tags. just fender tags.

fender tags really don't mean anything to anybody but us, so there is nothing illegal about reproducing them (or using reproductions).

edit- should have said 'as far as I know, anyways' :)

Mine was long lost with one of the previous owners, Galen Govier reproduced one for me but ONLY with the build sheet and either a Vin tag or title

I have heard of some less than respectable folks that will reproduce one with what ever options you choose.

it is not illegal. the fender tag only shows build codes as does the build sheet. the law is only concerned with the VIN # on the registration matching the VIN # on the vehicle. they are not concerned about the fender tag VIN # matching any other numbers on the car or concerned if it is a "U" code 73 RR GTX on the fender tag or if it is "G" code RR on the fender tag or if it even has a fender tag. this is buyer beware. if the car in question is claiming to have been built with a mess of options and the owner only has a fender tag to prove such, even though the fender tag has the VIN # stamped on,that doesnt necessarily make it so.that is when a broadcast/build sheet and a window sticker become so important, to back up the fender tag when claiming such options.yes it is morally wrong to fake fender tag options and try to pass it off, but in the laws eyes, they couldnt care less if a car had a 426 hemi or a 318, or FC7 paint or EV2 as long as the vehicle VIN# matches the registration.it is up to the buyer to prove to himself that a car is legit with whatever documentation is available and finding numbers where ever possible.

i agree that tags shouldn t falsely represent a vehicle. they should have some kinda mark on them , obviously stating, that they are a fake. unless the owner has all the proper documentation. period. i appreciate responses. does anyone have any sources or proof to back up the reproductions being legal? or illegal? that is what i m after. i have heard it is illegal in michigan and oklahoma, but....

well, the fender tag isn't used in any way as far as being an official source of the VIN or anything, so I can't see any way that they could be illegal...

whare can i get one my original is in poor shape and like to replace it
thanks Al

quit showing me that purple duster. looks like my first car. i want another one. i m thinking it isn t illegal also. i ve been combing the internet for the past week and have found most evidence leaning towards it being legal. til today. i found some info on 1970 hamtramk registry site today for a few states and the info states ,something to the effect, that removing, altering, defacing, a vehicle identification number or derivative of...illegal. that s ohio. wouldn t a fender tag be a derivative of??

well, i wish i could say from me you could get one al. but until i know for sure that it is legal...you cannot. trimtags.com seems to be a good source.

I think if you have a build sheet you are good to go as far as having one made. What you do with it legally or illegally is up to you. I would say if you misrepresent a car to be what it's not , and get caught obviously you could get into some issues.

It isn't illegal in Oklahoma. Galen a/k/a GTS sends his out to A. G. Backeast to have the actual tag made and here is his website complete with address http://www.datatags.com/ . You don't need Galen at all.

I did find this about Michigan.
"DECODING: 1962-1974 Body Code Plates (AKA Fender Tags) and Production Broadcast Sheets. We also reproduce lost or rusty Body Code Plates (AKA Fender Tags), Monroney Labels (AKA Window Stickers) 1966-68 Certicards. (Most services not available in Michigan). Check out our web page with a complete list of services and a little bit about me at www.gvgovier.com GTS-Galen V. Govier, WPC# 6437, 37260 Sand Burr Ln, Prairie du Chien, WI 53821, 608-326-6346, 608-326-8061 FAX"

thats what i m looking for. good info. if this crap get s hashed out once and for all. i wanna offer an affordable fender tag.

I am without a trim tag and I think it would complete my engine compartment.
If I am pulled over by a police officer they are not going to look it my trim tag it is not the Vin tag. If I can buy a license plate to replace my old one why can`t I buy a plate to replace my trim tag. I say go for it trimtags.com does it.

It's not the reproduction tag that is illegal it's using a reproduction tag to misrepresent the car as in a future sale. That is fraud and you could be charged with such, or sued for damages.

exactly. but, if you have a car, with no broadcast sheet or window sticker, and only a fender tag that matches all the VIN # information, but has a slew of options, that did not come on the car, unless you can prove the tag is a fake, you cannot prove otherwise(in most cases) unless it has been registered with a registry and/or with a broadcast sheet /window sticker.fraud has happened,is happening, and will continue to happen, unfortunately.

they are illegal in michigan
not unless you are trying to use it as a VIN tag.it is a TRIM tag. it is not a VIN tag. you dont use the TRIM tag to register a vehicle.if that was the case it would not be merely SCREWED to the inner fender. it would be rivited like the VIN tag.show us a law that states that, removing a trim tag or replacing a trim tag on any 68-80s mopar is punishable by law.misrepresenting a vehicle by way of a trim tag is morally wrong but not legally.it is up to the buyer to do his homework.

I also find it hard to believe they are illegal. Following that train of logic, any car missing one would be unregistrable.

exactly. how many mopars are LEGALLY registered across the u.s. in every state , without a trim tag?every day. how many cars are LEGALLY bought and sold and plated missing or incorrect trim tag and the new owners have no clue there is even supposed to be one or that it even has the VIN # on it? everyday. a trim tag is like adding a hood scoop in the laws eyes.no where on any paperwork do you need any information off of the trim tag to buy, sell or register a car anywhere in the u.s. when a vehicle is reported stolen, the information is pulled off of the registration VIN# and cross-referenced with the dash VIN # and nothing else."numbers matching" vehicles are for the purist and the hobbyist, and what makes them valuable is all the documentation and visual numbers proving that the VIN matches the motor/trans/sequence numbers on the body stampings/trim tag/build sheet etc.etc.

Bottom line is that fraud is illegal.

Selling gold platted lead as solid gold is illegal.

As long as you don't represent something that isn't you should be OK.
