Hello All,
Just wanted to share my glove box stereo install. I still wanted to be able to put things in the glove box so I made a custom mount.

Glove box all hacked up. I used really stiff cardboard on the bottom.

I used leftover carpet and glued it to the cardboard.

Turned out ok I think and I still can put stuff around the stereo.

I really should have measured the mount and where I drilled the holes on the steel. I only drilled one hole that wasn't on the car which is on the right side near the air vent. I'll get some more photos soon.

there's a local shop that bends a piece of sheet metal and drills/cuts it out as a bezel to mount the unit in ,then they cut the unused rear portion of the old box out to fit tightly around the perimeter of the sheet metal piece ,it looks real good like it belongs ,it is very dependent on the depth of the unit of course , I want to do one to put both a stereo and a row of 3 modern guage's in there out of site .

Looks great, do your self a favor and take the cardboard out and mount it to some plywood.
Less flex and the CD's will not bounce.
Plywood is cheap and you already have the cardbord templates to make them out of.

Looks great love the carpet idea! I did that with my stereo a year ago and sense than I installed a classic auto air unit and it really took up alot of the space to install the radio back in there, but i got it done. I still like that carpet idea.

Thanks ! Yeah I thought there was more room to install but right in the middle is about the only spot it fit. Ill put plywood in there too.

Changing channels,etc.., while driving will be more dangerous than texting.
These modern Japaneese jukeboxes have waaaaay too many buttons on them.
I cant operate mine very well and its placed within reach and sight.
Be careful

i agree, its gonna take me a week to get my Kenwood set up once its up and running, but i've got a remote for mine that should make it a little safer to use while driving as it only has a few functions on it.
I like the blue-tooth feature on these new head units though, anxious to see how it works.

Just a word of warning, I would be careful using cardboard like that over the amplifier heat sink. I see a potential for overheating the amplifier as it no longer has vent holes for breathing. I'd hate to see a car fire start from that.

Also, electronics function better at lower temperatures, but I didn't think that would be your primary concern when your dash lit up. I applaud you on your work, as there is no way I would have the patience for that lol. I just want to make sure at least SOME air can get to that head unit. If not, I fear for the longevity of the amplifier and the cardboard, not to mention the dash.

Thanks all for the comments.

Yes I have a remote. No I will not be changing channels/texting/talking/eating/chewing/etc... anything... while im driving. Just listening to some tunes...

I have the bottom/back of the unit uncovered holes cut out out on the top carpet which are hard to see to have it venting. It doesnt appear to be too hot after a long drive, but I will really keep an close eye out for overheating. The cardboard no longer exists, I changed to plywood.

What's a CD? Oh, yeah ... those antique round music playing things. They are a thing of the past now. iPods, MP3 players and flash drives are the way to go. I love the front speaker bracket. I used that myself. I was going to mount all my stuff in the trunk and use a remote, but the PO had already cut the dash for a din mount, so I just stuck it in the dash. I like the look. You did a great job on the finishing as well.

Glad to hear it. I only thought about the vent holes being hidden after I posted. I didn't mean to undermine your design in any way. Again, good job on the install, it looks great.

I didn't consider your having a remote before my earlier post.
There are marine stereos with wired remotes that have a LED display.
That remote will provide time, station, etc.., along with function controls while the head unit is installed anywhere , even in the trunk.
Happy moparing

It was a lot of fun getting that front speaker bracket installed, wasn't it? I did mine when I replaced the dash pad and it still was a PIA. Worth every scratch, though.

HAHA! Oh yeah what a royal pain to put that speaker in. You should buy the one that the guy (can't remember his name) on this forum. I made my own and that in it self was a pain.

I did buy the one from the guy on FABO. It's just accessing it and then getting the damn nuts on the bolts. I ended up with a swivel on a bunch of long extensions. Then i put a piece of paper around the nut and jammed it into the socket to hold it in place and finally got it started. I ran Infinity Kappa 3.5's in front and 6X9's in the back. I dropped an Alpine deck in and started wiring for my amp yesterday. It's pretty damn loud already, but I like it loud.

i put a cd player/amp/speaker set up in my dart this past summer....I love it...now I just have to put the cd player in the glovebox, very similiar to what you did
I put a sony explode head unit with 2 6x9 sony explodes in the package tray and two 10 inch subwoofers boxed in the trunk with a thousand watt sony explode amp in the back, what a PITA running all them wires front to back, but i love it still got the original AM radio in the dash for looks
