i have had them in silver, black , orange, blue, green.....what is actually correct ?

all my four speeds are 67-73..

I the bell housings are engine color and trans is silver.

You might contact cudachick1968 and ask her. She has a book that gives the details on a lot of parts to go with the powder coating business she has. It did show the caliper color when another member asked.

i've seen the transmissions not painted at all actually..but i've most commonly seen them black and cast iron/grey.

the bell housings i've seen them engine color, or bare aluminum...

It might be year dependent on some parts. My early bell housings (cast iron) are engine color but my later ones (aluminum) are natural. All the transmissions I've seen are natural bare metal.

From MaMopar I recall the trannies being cast iron grey also and recall the bell housings being bare aluninum but it has been so many years that I am not positive.

The bells were on the motor when painted so they had the front torward the motor painted engine color and the rear portion was bare and had overspray. The trans had no paint at all , Bare cast. I painted my trans cast iron . and my bell engine color orange it is a 71 340
