I have a good amount of side projects I do for friends and have been hand forming patch panels for most sheet metal work. I recently decided to pick up the Harbor Freight cheapo planishing hammer.

I built the stand primarily because I liket o, but I have been known to be cheap now and then as well.:D

Anyhow.. I tried a small fender for my first piece and it came out pretty decent. This is the first time I have used one of these and I had to work this part in order to figure out exactly how to get the piece to "crown" like I need.

The tool itself is pretty sweet really. I paid about 150.00 with a 2 year replacement warranty. I had coupons and all, so it brought the price down enough to justify buying the replacement warranty.

We'll see how long it holds out. I have found that if you take good care of their pneumatic tools, they actually do last a good while.

I have been looking at one of those. Stand looks good, needs paint to match the hammer.:D

Nice work!A couple of jobs like that, you are bucks ahead.

Thanks guys! yeah its a little noisy! I did fill it with sand however. That dampened it a little. Im also going to seal the stand, and fill the legs with sand as well. Ill be putting some rubber isolating feet on it too.

I tried that "fender" real quick and was pretty happy with it. I just sketched out the pattern on the flat sheet, cut it, and started playing with it. Just in the 20 minutes it took for that part I learned a lot about which directions to move the piece in when trying to form it a particular direction.

It seems most of my side work has come in the form of 30s, and 40s cars lately. As you can imagine its a bit more challenging to form a patch panel for those fenders than it is for 60s and 70s "squared off looks.

Ill update here when I get a few more pieces under my belt. So far though.... Im happy with this cheapo tool!
