I have a 74 duster 360 that I got the wiring harness out of a 74 valiant. I have this relay that the cover is gone and I have no idea what it is for- makes it hard to order one. Anyway- it is located really close to the ignition box and ceramic ballast. It has a total of 4 prongs but has two sets of plugs hooking into it. One is a 3 prong plug and the other is just one. The 3 prong plug has one yellow wire, one yellow w/ black stripe, and one black. The lone plus is just one black wire. I dont get any juice to my ign switch-im wondering if this has anything to do with it?-doubt it. Either way- would like to get a new replacement. It is in the same wiring as the ignition unit and ballast.

What is that mess of cable ends under that rusted nut. Thats what I would be fixing. Deffinately doesn't belong there

time to go through that wiring before that car catchs fire! its a fire hazzard

agreed that looks pretty bad! I don't think it is the starter relay though because i think i see the starter relay under those thick battery cable gauge wires. Could be wrong but i'll think that part you're holding doesn't belong.

That mess of cable ends under that rusted nut is a mess I do plan to fix. I sold this car 10 years ago and bought it back. I was in the process of tearing it apart back then- when I had a garage. Now-no garage- so trying to get it to run. Had to get another wiring harness out of a dart and doing this in a crunch time. One of those- lets get it running- then make it nice deals. I got her running, but need to get some of these issues figured out and nicer weather. Right now- I cant5 seem to use the ign switch-wont do anything- so maybe as said above-starter relay- will fix that. Then off to get better grounds behind dash. I did the rewire for a high output alt already also. I didnt have the dash, windshield, and half the wiring in it for 10+years. Going by help here and what I remember where things went. It helped last year when I had a 75 duster sitting right next to it-its sold now.

looks like an aftermarket horn relay, the starter relay looks like it is the thing with all the wires going to the stud, post some more pictures so a person can tell

I have a 74 duster and I am 90% sure that is part of the seat belt interlock and I did away with that a long time ago, make sure the connections under your seats are disconnected and you should be able to ditch that.

Looks like a seat belt relay to me. Unhook it and see if the engine will crank with the key. If not, cut the two yellows, splice 'em together, and toss the rest in the garbage.

yep- its a mess in there-just trying to get everything to work before it gets cleaned up. Its not a driver yet. I just put a windshield in it in the fall. Dont have the bucket seats in yet, and the dash is about half put together. If it was a driver- yeah- Id be worried, but I disconnect the battery when Im not working on it.

CudaMark- those are definitely looking like the way the harness plugs work on it. Is that what they are-seatbelt relays?

The seatbelts had an electrical circuit which operated with that relay, you could not start the car without the belts hooked up. There was an easy way to disable the system, you could unhook the connectors to the harness under the seat.

I don't remember, I think the button was for an emergency start if the system failed. People raised hell about them, and they were eventually changed to the warning lamp/ buzzer you see today, with no engine interlock.

AS I said, if you think that's what it is, remove it. The engine should not crank. Jumper the two large yellow leads, and it should crank. Of course if you have an auto, you much have it in park/ neutral, and if you have a stick with the clutch safety switch, the clutch pedal must be depressed.

I wish to heck some of these guys with later shop manuals, 73/4/5, etc, would post them in the "download" thread. They have to be "out there."

I did the same but with a 73 duster and 74 Valiant harness same problem no juice to the ignition the black wire at the bottom ground it then it should have juice. the other I thought they were the backup lights and go to the tranny maybe thats why they dont work lol going to look at that now new tranny harness new switch dont work! maybe because they are hooked to my seat belt should do up the belts and the backup lights may come on lol I hope I am not that stupid but maybe

whew that was close still dont work tho

Could it ba a netural or clutch relay?

Nope. For many many MANY years, the starter relay has acted as the active component for the neutral safety switch:

dgtwo- let me know what you come up with- sounds like we are in the same boat. Im going to try to put a jumper where that relay is and find that black wire for ground. I had the engine running last fall-all from under the hood (pos bat wire with toggle switch to coil, jump at starter relay-that sorta thing). Just getting the dash to light up, turn signals to work nice, be able to use ign switch at steering column...you know- the right way lol. Need to get battery recharged first.

Yes, it's the seat belt interlock relay. I tested both of mine and they work.
