904 Tranny question

I am restoring a 68 dart with a 170 cu. in. slant six with a 904 tranny. The car runs fine as long as it has tranny fluid however, alot of tranny fluid leaks out. When the car is level and warm and in neutral, I see a drip from the front of the bellhousing and I also see drops hanging from underneath where the speedo cable goes and the tranny pan. Very fresh fluid. Any help would be appreciated. I hope I don't have to rebuild it. It shifts fine and runs fine, but the thing leaks like a stuck pig. Please help. Thanks, John.
 
One tip is to fix the highest leaks first. Fix the Speedo seals first and check it. then The Pan Gasket and probably put a filter kit in it. If it still leaks but you can only see it from the bell housing then it's probably the Pump seal. That will require pulling the Trans out. Refrain from driving it while it's low on fluid or you may end up needing to rebuild it.
 
Yea, what he said,...I might add that if the trani must come out, take a good hard look at the bushing behind the seal,...unless the seal "just dried out", chances are the bushing may be worn,...same for the rear or driveshaft seal as well
 
The torque convertor snout may have mess up the seal. Dripping from the bellhousing can be blown all the way to the back while driving. A good tranny shop should only charge about 300 bucks for a tear apart, clean and re-seal. That's if you haul it to them.

I vote to go the other way around. If you have a torque converter seal leaking, the transmission has to come out anyway so why mess with the other leaks. Pull it out and do a full reseal and be done with it. If it's not leaking at the converter seal, then yeah, repair the ones that are. You may have to clean everything up first so you can see exactly where the fresh oil is coming from.
