How in the hell did that happen?

A 74 year old man with advanced Parkinsons was in a Starbucks parking lot that was beside the intersection we were sitting at. We watched as people tried to get his keys from him because they thought he was very drunk (but it was the Parkinsons). Instead he jumped in his Toyota Rav4, threw it in reverse and punched it. My wife, 11 yr old son, and I watched the whole thing as he hit 3 cars in the parking lot as he did a big reverse loop. Still in reverse and building speed the Rav4 shot up out of the parking lot, glanced off the nose of an old Chevy Lumina that was behind us, and slammed into us. We had no where to go sitting at a red light in rush hour traffic. We knew we would be hit and I had time to put the truck in park and put both feet on the brakes but he still hit with enough force and at enough angle to lift our truck up and to the right nearly a foot while pushing us into the small SUV in front of us.
I asked everyone if they were OK and then jumped out and ran back yelling at the old SOB that he could have killed someone. If it had been a kid I would have punched the crap out of him thru the window. It wasn't until the police arrived and interviewed the gentleman that they found out he wasn't drunk, but had Parkinsons. The truck wasn't even a year old so it wasn't totaled, but it still cost just under $17,000 to repair everything. My medical bills were $15,600 (whiplash is no joke, had numbness in left hand and a numb arm for 5 weeks). Attorney is still working settlement against his insurance (USAA). Hope to hear something within the next 3 weeks. It's been 10 months since that happened!
