Saw a while ago someone had developed an adapter that will allow us to use a Comp Plus shifter mechanism in our A bodies with consoles. I searched and couldn't find the post.
Hope someone remembers who it was. My 41 year old stock Hurst shifter is about had it and Brewer's doesn't have the "offset". mechanism.

Hello, I bought one of those adapters thru a company and it was way way off. If you have welding equipment, I suggest you do it yourself.

The one I bought was supposed to work with a Hurst box, bolt on shifter and E body pistol grip. It was too far forward and too far to the right. Actually prevented going into 1st and 3rd.

I am not saying they are all incorrect, just look at it carefully before you buy if you find it.

Regards

Was kinda thinking about fabbing up my own. It's a shame we can't buy new parts that actually work. I found one from Mancini's that looks way to high and to the right, just like you mentioned.....

Thanks for the info

Just pop the handle out of your factory console shifter, drill 2 holes in it and bolt it to the comp plus shift mechanism. Bolt the shifter to the stock mounting bracket on the trans, shift handle should come out in stock location.

Don't think that'll work. Here's a couple pics of my shifter. Brewers don't have it. I think it's very close to a 69 Camaro shifter. It's actually stamped Chrysler, and Hurst Comp Plus....I'm killin myself over this. I wanna NEW one!

There was a FABO guy making them. I'll have to look for that. This is what you are trying to achieve.

I can't seem to find the thread. I think they were being sold through Mancini or Brewers but he stopped selling them to make some changes so they would fit better. It seem like something that could be make pretty easily.

That setup looks a little too far to the right. Found a camaro shifter on the Hurst website that looks identical to mine.....who knows?
Wonder if I just rebuild the thing if it would be "as new".
This thing really gets hammered at the dragstrip and that offset shifter handle looks like it would just snap like a twig.

Just another frustrating Mopar thing :)

Any other info would be greatly appreciated!

Ah ha, I see you guys (ironmike and Pauls340) have had this converstion before. I would love to see if anyone has used the adapter and how it fits.

Yeah. So my car was a "dealer installed console" according to the original owner. He don't know crap other that they DID use a GM shifter at the time. And they did quite a few of 'em. I actually got the part number. It a Hurst 3914340.

My dilemma is buy the new GM Comp Plus or buy the correct A body set up from Brewers and just fab up an adapter for the handle. I can't see paying over 300 bucks for a console type handle.

What would all you guys do?

What exactly is the issue with the old one? If the shifter mechanism is worn out, you can rebuild it, and reuse the original handle.

Guys, I am still here, funeral set me back a few days. The short version is the first adapter worked in my 71 Demon...wrong shifter, wrong shifter mount, wrong shifter linkage. The setup I had was what came with the car and it looked correct from under the car. An Ebody Pistol Grip worked without a console but I wanted a console. Once I started getting feedback that some setups were hitting I bought the correct Abody Hurst 4spd from Brewers with linkage and mount and the console template to mount the console correctly. The second adapter is done. Big changes as you can see. My problem is the shop making it is in battles with Chrysler on two of his in house contracts. I want to squareup with those who bought the first adapter however I am still waiting for pricing. Our problem is some of your setup might not be correct, especially since Demons didn't have 4 spd consoles in 71. I have a list of 5 who had problems with first adapter. I will be contacting them as soon as I get pricing (which I plan on eating most of it). Others should pm me here. Also, sidenote. I did not do this to make enough money to buy another Demon. I did this to pass on what I thought was a need for Abody Demon owners. Work with me here and I won't have to file Chapter 11. Thank you. ps; new adapter is angled more and an inch closer to driver.

Another thing. Either the Ebody short Pistol Grip or the Bbody fits and shifts with no problems. The Hurst Pistol Grips can be mounted on either side of the adapter depending on your likes. I mounted mine on the left side bringing the handle closer since I shrunk a little after my prostate surgery:banghead:

Wayne will rebuild you stock shifter and it will be right.
Cheaper than fabbing and adapting.

Might just rebuild it myself, or buy a new one(69 Z-28).....the adapter looks nice but I can't use a pistol grip. Not good for powershifts at the track.

I just bought a factory 69 shifter and console. I used the setup for shifter console placement in my resto thread. When the car is assembled I will be going with the adapter and the pistol grip. I have a friend that is using this adapter with a a-body non console shifter handle. I put the handle in a press for him and put an arc in the handle to move the ball back over a little to the left that the adapter moved it to the right . It looks and works perfect. A Pistol grip would need a slight 'S' double arc to make it stand straight up instead of just an angle to the left.

I under stand your concern for speed shifting a pistol grip on a Comp plus base. When coming back for second you have a tendency of pulling to the left an getting caught in the side throw for reverse. I had alot of b-bodies in the past and got use to pulling straight back. My car will have a hurst Super shifter Base same as installed in my thread. Push down for reverse . Can't miss second unless your an idiot..

Note in pics below the super shifter has stronger linkage except for revese rod held to compare. The others are straight and reinforced. Much better than the factory mechanism. Just some input from experience I have had over the years.

No, the assembly I have is not forsale. And yes a automatic console fits right on with the auto carpet. And they do repop the 4spd top plate . This is good info . you can buy everything new for 4spd console shift. No rechroming. No wood decal. or finding that rare plastic 4spd console base. Good luck and hope this info helps those who care.

It wasn't cheap to find this out. And I wont be using any of the parts I bought. This also make putting a console in a AC car possible . the auto consoles for AC are different and 4spd consoles won't work. It makes it possible for me to put AC in my car .

Now I need to find a AC 70-71 340 car for a parts car. If not say good buy to the 70 I pictured. I don't care How many I destroy I am building what I want. So what ever it takes. And it will have data plates to match the options. So you number guys can get out the tissues. I'm placing my order for a Duster and filling it myself.

Oh yeah notice I used the wrong year 1969 hump. No Cassette placement indent. But its not getting one anyway. I'll need one for the Demon and I am considering the NOS forsale. These are bolted in place with self taps not welded.
