My 383 is loving this!

A cheap carb is no where near the the efficiency of EFI. If this was not the case you would not see EFI in everything from 1985 on up(or there abouts).

EFI has massive benefits, Just like roller cams vs flat tappet, or good higher flowing aluminum heads/intakes and so on. It all cost more, but the benefits out weigh the cost in most cases.

An EFI system WILL make your engine run smoother, cleaner and more fuel efficient. A cleaner running engine will last a lot longer. Remember ridge reamers? You basically dont need them for a EFI engine tear down, even ones with 200K+ miles.

Carbs are GREAT, but EFI is better.
