I have a chance to buy a 64 6cyl , orignal gold on gold for good price. Going to drive tommorrow owner says has a 8 3/4 rear could this be factory . Auto floor shift car. Any more info to look for would be nice. I have some A-body knowledge own 340 duster. And 1st. car owned new was 68 formula s 383 car.

it is possible, if it is 8 3/4 it will look like the one in your two previous cars ( no rear cover )

Yea but, didn't the 6 and small v8's use 7 1/4 as base. Nothing against the better 8 3/4

Am I mistaken or did the 8 3/4" not come in an A-body until 1965?? And to answer amx's question, the 8 3/4" was an option available for any motor size, although you are right that most 6 cylinder cars probably didn't need them. Never say never with Ma Mopar, but I think the 8 3/4" wasn't available in an A-body until 1965. Thats my story and I'm stickin' to it!! Geof

I believe 65 was the first year for 8 3/4 in A-bodies.

I had a 64 that had all Formula S options, but once again, Formula S was not a model until 65.

It was late in the 65 model from what I know. The 64 and early 65 had the 7 1/4 and with the suspension package / Formula S they offered a sure-grip 7 1/4

I always thought it was the '66 model year that was the first to get the 8 3/4. Does anyone have a documented '65 with an 8 3/4? Window sticker or build sheet?

Mark, do you remember the thread just a short while ago from the member from Germany?? He was having a problem getting his 14x5.5" rims OK'd by the safety police??

Someone in that thread posted a 1965 option and package code document listing the available options and what features and options were available in certain packages. In those documents I believe it had the 8 3/4" as an option as well as the rim sizes the OP was looking for.

Good read that bit of info, I'm going to look back through the threads and see if I can come up with that post!! Geof

I have an original 64 Barracuda with a 273, automatic and two barrel carb. It has a 7 1/4 rear end.

Yeah, I just haven't seen one in a '65 model. I've seen a few dealer installed disc brakes in '65 (on original purchase paperwork) but no 8 3/4's yet. I have a REAL early '66 Barracuda (8-17-65 Hamtramck build date) that came with an 8 3/4 so I know they had them by that time but I'm not sure how much earlier they were in stock.

Early-a 8 3/4's were not officially available until 66 model year( build date of July 1st 1965 & later). Of course unofficial stuff happened back in the day so definitely possible. Have never personally seen a 65 or earlier with factory 8 3/4.

I'M not savy on rear ends on a 65 cuda. So how does one tell if its a 7 1/4 or 8 3/4? Gear ratio on a stock 65 cuda 273 2 barrell automatic floor shift?

7 1/4 has a cover that bolts on from the rear and 8 3/4 does not have a rear cover.
