Tips for engine removal

Here is the plan. I'm having the original 225 slant 6 rebuilt. Right now I have the 1968 225 slant 6 in the car. I want to swap out engines. I have read some put the car on ramps some don't what is the easiest way I can get this engine out and the new engine in. I will rent a cherry picker to remove and place in the dart. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I dont like ramps for any service really. I would support the front end safely on stands.
throw a sinch strap around the torsion bars to support the front end of the trans, then unbolt disconnect everything that easiest to access underneath, then sit it on the wheels again.
As the slant is lifted it first rotates to straight up. Then the torsion bars lift the front end as the engine weigh is lifted. All this results in lifting the engine quite high. It may be to your advantage to let the air out of the front tires. Some will suggest backing off the torsion bar adjust screws but I dont go there. Everyone does things there own way.
Best bet is wait for several replies and choose what seems best for you and the equipment/tools you have.
 
i have always unbolted the engine and trans, and removed everything from the front of the motor and remove the radiator, i also took my grill off just so im not leaning on it and busting it up, and rolled the car out from under it while jacking up the engine. i let the car do the work instead of yanking on the hoist. i always take them out as a unit. i can pull these out by myself in about an hour to an hour and a half. i find this works great for me. i have always been able to get the oil pan high enough to clear the radiator support and lift on the tailshaft while rolling the car back.
 
here is pic with the engine clearing the radiator support, i take my hoods off no matter what just for ease of access and to avoid any interference... this is a 73 duster

if you use a chain and bolt it to the head, it will naturally balance itself with the intake and exhaust manifolds still bolted on... this was my ghetto /6 to V8 swap in the dirt because my garage was already full of cars and parts lol

The six's have hooks on them designed for lift points. Perhaps someone here has a picture of what I'm referring to.
 
If you have to ask that 1st you are probably in over your head to start. I would suggest getting someone with some sort of experience to assist & guide you as you pull the engine. Safety should be your 1st concern.
 
The easy way. I use to use the hoist to lift the car off the motor. now I have a lift but the hoist works just as well and you leave the hood on.

Rear up on ramps. Disconnect and unbolt everything. Up and out, nice and easy. I used a floor jack to support the tranny until the motor and tranny were clear of the engine bay.

I just did a 225/6 swap in my '71 dart. It's really not very hard to pull an engine and trans from the car. Just unhook everything and pull it out with a hoist. I would recommend having another person help though. It is really a two person job. I had to remove my hood, but that's it. Did it all in my garage with no problems with safety. No jacks or ramps required. In fact, they'd probably just get in the way. At least for me. Just be prepared to clean up all the trans fluid after lifting the drivetrain out of the car.
 
if you take an old spray paint can lid and slide it in the tailshaft and tape it up you wont spill any trans fluid.
 
Nice idea. I'm going to try that next time I swap motors. Thanks for that tip. That's a good one.
 
seeing how your going to be that far into it i'd replace the front seal on the trans. with a good motor puller you wont need to worry about the front end coming up that far, i removed a /6 from my 72 duster in a gravel driveway no problems lifted the motor up and pushed the car back its also nice to have an extra person to help. as for the trans i used a small chain looped around the torsion bars and under the bell to support it
