How do I get the vinyl top and front and rear windsheild trim off without bending it? Is there a special tool?

I am pretty sure there is a tool. I am curious also for the drip rail trim. Don't want to mess it up.

Ya'll call me, I'll walk ya thru it 352 634 1600.......Wagg's .and I have replacement trim and can polish to show quality if ya need
Yeah mine is already bent a little and I tried to get it off yesterday and bent it more. F@*k.

You can use a can opener to remove the driprail molding (just put tape around it so you dont scratch it), and the windshield trim is removedwith a tool that looks like a hook.

ya'll can try them tools all you want for the drip rail trim, I use a hammer and when it comes off it doesnt bow all up and look stoopid when you wan't to put it back on......I told a member here how to remove the moldings I was buying from him and he followed directions and I got my trim in beautiful shape, polished it and installed it, yes it does take a gentle touch......... my phone is free after 9 pm unless you are with verizon, I'm usually up till 11 p.m.

I guess everyone has their own secrets and ways to do things. I do agree with you that a gentle touch is a must....most of the time. We just finished a 70 Hemicuda at the shop and I had to use a pair of pliers and a screwdriver to get them off because someone glued them on in the past.

Thanks wagg's for the offer. If I ever get some time I will give you a call. Working two jobs right now.

Do a youtube search on using the tool for windshield trim. It's a bugger to use if you don't know what's under the trim and how to make the tool work.

I use one of the simple old fashioned can openers with tape on the other trim. Press hard so it doesn't slip. Little tugs with it, moving along the trim a little at a time while lifting on the trim and it pops up.

Yes, this is a Corvair, but it's a great video showing how to do this:

I've never used anything but that trim tool. Used it for years and years in bodyshops, and yes if you are patient it help's a ton.

Funny, but I never scratched trim not once. Good thing too, seeing how they were all customers cars!

Harbor Freight is offering their windshield trim kit for only $9.99 right now. I was dreading purchasing ANOTHER set of tools to do another job until I found that out!

For front and rear windsheild trim, the arrow looking one is the one I've been using for 20 years. It unhooks the clips. The K-D ones works too, but more expensive (have one of those too). The windsheild trims are not hard.

The drip rail is tough getting off without denting or bending up the bottom edge of it. Those tools don't work for that. No real tools to get that off. Sometimes wood or hard plastic with a light hammer against the bottom edge works. But it some areas/cars that's very hard to do that way.

nice vid but this still scares me lol gotta do my 73 duster soon i hope i dont f#@%$ it up

Ok I was given a hint for removing drip rail that I really liked. Use a piece of a dowel and a hammer to tap it off. Garunteed not to scratch also watch where the joints are and be sure to pull off where the joint lap is above first. Also for other clip based trim I have a wedge like nylon pry tool I ordered from Oreillys. Great piece and makes it SOOO easy.

I work at an auto glass center and the old stuff is much easier to remove than the newer vehicles. Believe me on this one. Now everything is made out of plastic and has plastic clips. We replaced the windshield in a 2011 Ford Explorer. We had to remove the out side A-pillar covers which had these small plastic clips and they break very easily. We snapped them back down and finished the job. The lady drops by the shop and both covers blew off! My coworker and I got our arses in trouble. We were going to urethane them back on but if the windshield has to be replaced again it would be just about impossible to remove the covers. The boss called the Ford dealership ordered news one and was told that they are blowing off straight from the factory. We got the new covers and noticed that they have changed the adherence to the vehicle in which Ford installed two sided tape and clips on the covers. lol
