73 Duster Restoration

George, well get together soon !

Lonewolf, It didnt take all that long but it was the original paint and the hot sun did a lot of the work for me. Im still working on the roof and trunk which were covered in surface rust, They are takingf me longer then the rest of the car did.

It really needs to warm up here. I need to get some primer on it and the filler I put on the 1/4s a little while ago still hasnt dried.

worked on the passenger side 1/4 this afternoon. The only panel that needed work. I used a Eastwood Co. stud welder and slide hammer. They sell for about $250 and are well worth it all though Im not a huge fan of the slide hammer. I was to lazy to go back inside and get the camera.

After I worked the dents outs a figured I may as well get the filler on it. Its been about 2hrs and its still not dry. Not sure if its a bad tube of (or not enough) hardener or if 55* is just to cold for it to dry. Looks like I'll be scraping it off.

Picked a gallon of Evaporust yesterday. Im trying to do something with the rust on the roof and trunk lid without grinding the crap of it. My plan was to spray the evaporust on the roof and cover it with plastic to keep it from evaporating over night. Didnt work, LOL

Rust 3, Adam 0. So far Ive tried 80 grit DA disc which work but are taking for ever. Then I tried some SEM Rustmort which is a converter. That worked ok but made a mess and etched the crap out of any clean metal it touched (full of acid) The Evaporust did seem to do anything over night except flash rust anything it dripped on.

So some 36 grit grinding disc and 40 grit DA disc are on deck.

How about Naval Jelly? I used it on a lot of parts from the gold 69 Dart I did a few years ago. You can work in small areas at a time, and keep it from making a mess.

George

Blackbombers friend tried some naval jelly on the trunk lid. Its a 1ftX1ft platch patch thats as hard as a rock, LOL The DA wont even make a scratch on it.

Sounds like your going to have to have the hood and truck lid media blasted. Maybe soda blasting would be best?

Riddler

Soda blasting doesn't touch rust. I've got a pressurized sandblaster, if you want to try it. I bought it for the car, then decided I didn't want to deal with the mess.

Oh, and I don't know what the deal with Evaporust is. I have seen the results on this and other forums. But for me, with tools and bicycle parts, I couldn't get it to do a damn thing used as directed. I know it won't remove rust stains, so that could have been part of the problem. Since most of what you see on a chrome tool is the stain, not the little pinhole of rust.

It took a lot of sanding but between that and the SEM Rust-Mort I got the roof pretty clean.

Sure makes me wish my Dart was a cali car. Thank God I have the skill's to pull it off. Now I just need my body back. My diet has steadily but slowly improved my health to the point where I am looking for things to expend my extra energy on. So far it's just housework,ie; dishes, etc.

I will get there, just as you will get another mopar one day Adam!

I is a tad late reading what ya have there Adam:eek:ops:what I like the most your doing this yourself, good job.

I'd be careful blasting the roof since I've read numerous articles saying you can easily warp the metal & a roof being what it is, probably the flimsiest panel on the car I'd be careful. Might err on the side of caution & continue with the DA.

55 huh....................its already pushing 90 here. Enjoy your new project!

well I was making good progress today till disaster struck, LOL Finished up the filler work on the passenger side 1/4, Masked the car up, wiped it down and started spraying primer. Guess I should have stopped at the epoxy cause the high build is a mess, LOL

Started the task of sanding the primer down yesterday. The passenger side door and quarter, the roof and trunk lid are ok. The hood and driver side is a mess and the stuff is hard as a rock. Im hoping to get primer back on it this weekend.

That's a lot of rework there. Look on the bright side though, it's more time to spend with your car.:coffee2:

I was drunk one time and used epoxy catalyst in my surfacer. After I sobered up the next day I wondered why my primer was still wet. What a mess that was. Painting will make you want to pull your hair out sometimes.

the stuff that cracked is hard as rock LOL. Next time I'll wait 24hrs.

LMAO!! Drunk painting, I love it! (not judging, just admiring your honesty)
