Have a carter 750 cfm on a 440 with a mild cam in my charger. It idles at 1500 in park and neutral. When it is in gear it drops to 750. What could be the problem? Has this happened to someone? What did you do to fix it?

Well I changed the carb to the one I am askin about. the old one idled at 900 and in gear 750. when ichanged to new carb i changed the needles from the old one and adjusted it the same way. ran the same as old one for about 2 weeks and then idled at 1500.

If it started out idling at 900 and then jumped to 1500 after a few weeks and nothing was changIed I would look for a vacuum leak.

XS2. it could also be something going on with your vacuum advance (if you are using it)

i have a 600 holley on my charger using a 284/480 cam and a 2800 stall converter and it idles at 1250 and 700 in gear

..............that much variance from p/n to in gear there is definately a problem, 300 rpm would be considdered too much of a drop, like said check 4 a vacc leak.........or like said, ur vacc advance could be sticking.......have u tried adj the needles to see if it makes any difference?........kim........

Sounds like a vacuum leak or throttle blades may be locking up.

Make sure you have plenty of initial timing on it. Most mopars like 14-20 initial timing especially when you start putting performance camshaft in them.

Isn't any reason a mopar shouldn't idle under 1000rpm unless it has a giant camshaft in it. Like a 255+ at .050 cam. 509 hyd cammed bb's idle pretty easily at 900-950 when things are sorted out and that's a pretty large cam.
