Hi:
I am rebuilding the front suspension and brakes on my 1974 Scamp.
The rotors are very slightly undersized...the rotor has .94 minumum inscribed on it and the rotor is at .92. I am going to replace the rotors and was wondering if drilled and slotted rotors are really worth the extra cost.
At Rockauto, drilled and slotted are about 35.00 more each. What do you think???

Understand this, drilled rotors cant be turned and might crack. A slotted rotor will eat through the pads. Dr. Diff can sell you a set of slotted rotors just use a good pad. Ebc makes pads for the dusters and them make good pads. Firm feel can sell you a set of carbon something pads (I like ceramics). Hell dr. Diff can set you up with a rear disc setup for 525.

I have heard different opinions about why to have slotted and drilled rotors. One is that the drilled rotors allow more brake cooling. Another is that in the process of braking, a hot gas can develop between the brake pads and rotor and that the drilled holes and/or slots allow the gas to escape keeping this gas from interfering with the contact between the brake pads and rotors.

I had a car that I auto crossed. When I replaced the rotors I went with the same size but they were drilled. I did not notice any improvement in braking. I did notice that I started to develop cracks at the area of the drilled holes. I was told that the rotors were not manufactured poorly but that it was caused by the difference in temperature (expanding and contracting of the metal) at the area of the drilled holes. I have no experience with slotted rotors.

I put large Wilwood rotors on my Barracuda. I did not pay extra for drilled and slotted rotors. The car is mostly for the street and some occasional auto cross when I get it back on the road.

I do not believe the extra money is worth it for a street car. If it is a race car, it may be worth it to you.

Give a call to Wilwood, I gave had good experience with their tech guys. If you are racing auto cross or going to track days, talk to the other guys about their experiences.

You can get slotted and dimpled or just slotted from Brake Performance for about
120 a pair and their guarantee is pretty good also. I bought slotted and drilled that
are zinc plated black for 100 bucks shipped to my door on a special from them. I
drive about 1k per year max in my car so no big deal. They ended up being the same
cost as plain watch me rust rotors from Rock Auto.

I have a set of the drilled and slotted 11.75 rotors on my son's '68 Dart. The only reason we went that way was because he wanted the "look". Certainly for the street they make no difference. On the track, where I'll freely admit I have no experience with this car, it might improve performance or cooling, and on the track they just have to survive the day, not 10, 20, or 40,000 miles. If you like the look and don't mind spending a bit extra, get a set from Brake Performance. They have a 2 year warranty and are reasonably priced. And yes, I'm sure they're an offshore brand....

I had over 20k on my set from them on my daily driver jeep

This is only my opinion but I have seen several people n the Dakota world with the drilled ones have cracks develop. I personally if I had to have the slotted ones would get slotted and dimpled or just slotted. But like was mentioned on the street you won't really see any improvement.

Drilled and/or slotted rotors are a waste of money on anything but a competition car.

These cars regularly change out rotors so longevity isn't an issue.
