Started car today and and heard a banging,put it in reverse and it stopped. back in park and its knocking again... only hammers hard when in park.
 
Don't discount "simple" stuff like exhaust banging on something, etc
 
Thrust bearing in the engine will knock when in gear like that. Torque converter pushing on the crank is the cause. Check the end play / total travel of the crank shaft.

yea i had to red lock tight mine as they would come loose every couple months...

once they did it right after i had did some head work and i thought something let go... worst sound/feeling in the world... check those damn converter bolts...
 
Great news !
That is a horrible sound , and if you haven't heard it before , you expect puddles of oil on the ground and parts hanging out of the oil pan.
Loctite blue is also a good plan....red is pretty extreme.
It will work , but sometimes likes heat to remove the bolt afterwards.
