I have used both cork and rubber with good results. IMO the valve cover rails being nice and straight, clean, and proper torque on the bolts are the most important issues.
very much my experience. if you over tighten stamped steel cover bolts, you are almost gauranteed a leak. ive never had an aluminum cover leak with any type of gasket.
