Hey fellas, I am planning on installing a nice and loud car stereo in my '75 Scamp. I was looking at a Pioneer unit at Best Buy and a 45 watt amp.
For now I just want to run two 6x9's in the package tray.

Issue one: I don't like the space age look of the speaker covers on the speakers I saw. Have any of you mounted the speakers from underneath and just have the factory speaker cutouts in the package tray? WIth the 3 way and 4 way speakers I saw, I wonder whether there would be clearance issues with the package tray since the speakers are not flush on top. know what I mean?

Issue two: Where should I mount the radio? I don't want to cut the dash, so I would like to install under the dash. My car is an AC car (not working) so I have the three vent unit under the dash which I removed. There was a generic under dash mounting box at Best Buy I saw, but it looked HUGE.
ideas? thoughts?
Thanks!

All 6X9s I've used has a spacer at the outer edge so those center speakers aren't high enough to hit the package tray.

If you have a bucket seat car you can mount the stereo under
the rear of the passenger seat toward the middle of the car.
You can still reach the controls from the drivers seat with
your right hand.

That's where I have a double din am-fm, cassette and cd mounted.

Kenwood head unit with CD, aux. input and USB jack for iPod, bluetooth ready for hands free phone and mounted in dash, Kenwood 700 watt amp, pair Kenwood 6x9 120 watt 4 ways mounted below package tray (they fit perfect), pair Kenwood 4x6 60 watt mounted in aftermarket kick panels, pair 3.5" Kickers mounted in original speaker location using a purpose built aftermarket speaker bracket, no subwoofer... yet.

I would buy a stereo that outputs 50 watts per channel 4 channels, a good quality brand like Pioneer (I am not familiar with good quality stereo brands), that has bluetooth sync to your ipod/pone. Put the stereo in the glove box and run the factory unit in the dash as a dummy. No amp, run four 3 way good quality speakers that are rated properly to operate on 50 watts each, rather than speakers that take 150+ watts to operate. Then you do not need an amp, your speakers provide full range sound all powered by your stereo.
I have not sourced 50 watt 3 way, quality speakers, (such as 6x9) so I am just guessing they exist.

I have 6x9 Kenwoods under the package tray. I held them under it and ran the screws thrugh the tray holes and into the speaker mounting holes. I am ordering a bracket for the dash speaker from a guy on here it allows you to mount 2 3.5 in factory speaker opening. And will be ordering some new kick panels with the speakers grafted in them.

Been through the sound off stuff.A pair of thin mounted 5 1/4s sound much better cheaper than 6 by 9s in the back.If you crank it,6by 9s get nasty.IF YOU SPEND SOME CASH,6by 9s get good.Damn hard to beat seperates up front, depends on what media and music you listen to.

I should add that removing the package tray to install hardware under it for the speakers to mount on is/was the hardest part. There probably a dozen ways to do it. I used long screws with double nuts jambed before the speaker. Only #6 nuts would fit the recess in the speaker. Whatever is used needs to stay tight and not rattle.

Rice nuker idea is the same as I would have suggested.

There is a lot of different ways of installing a system in your car. How much you want to spend? How loud do you want it? Only speakers no subs?

I would agree with pauly on this. It is hard to go wrong with Kenwood as a good quality "middle of the road" system. Depending on the insulation you have in the car and the overall volume of the exhaust inside the car, external amps are the way to go. Glove box mounted head works well if you don't want to cut the dash, but most modern heads will fit well in the dash with minimum cutting. For speakers, (keeping quality and relative "inexpesiveness") I would stick with a Kenwood, Pioneer, or Infinity (although Polk, Bostons and MB Quarts among a few others are good as well, but tend to be a little more expensive) 6X9s for the back with a full spacer to allow for fitment to the package tray. Up front I would use the biggest speaker you can fit (with 6.5 separates being optimal). I myself and currently running a pair of 4 inch under the dash running off the head power with plans to put in something bigger in kick panels with an external amp in the future. I am also running a couple of good 10" subs with a mono amp for thump. Sorry for the long reply, but this has been my passion for the better part of 20 years and I am a bit opinionated on the subject.

As far as what I want the system to do....
I listen to Rock 'N Roll and Heavy Metal. Yes, I love it loud.
I've thought about the glovebox mount, but I want to be able to keep stuff in the glove box so that is out.
I want to mount the radio under the dash. The generic under-dash plastic box they sold at Best Buy was too large. For now I want to go with a 50W x4 Pioneer like the Pioneer 6400UB, and there was a 45 watt amp I was considering along with two 6x9's haven't decided on brand/type but probably 3 way. I will mount the amp in the trunk below the package tray.
I already removed the rear seat and package tray along with the trunk divider.

I just installed sirrus satellite in my 64 Dart, radio head in the glove box,did the two 4" speakers in place of the large dash speaker and two 6" in the doors (from previous owner), and a amp in the trunk works pretty good. the reason for sat radio is no good statios here where I live, and I can move it from car to truck,to boat ,to garage

Remember that when looking at stereo amp specs that 50x4 doesn't mean 50 watts all the time. That is peak output, rms is the constant power output and they usually run in the 15x4 range rms. Spend some time at crutchfield.com they are a very reputable audio dealer and carry a very good selection of quality components.

If you have a bucket seat car you can mount the stereo under
the rear of the passenger seat toward the middle of the car.
You can still reach the controls from the drivers seat with
your right hand.

Can you still text on your I-phone while changing stations? :burnout:

You could just go with a CD changer and/or XM/Serius system. Then all you would need is the controllers up front and not have to worry about mounting (depending on the kind you buy). I agree with Abodybomber that it's hard to find a set of 6X9's that sound good. I guess if you ran a sub for the bass with some crossovers to keep the lows out of the 6X9's, you'd probably be ok.

Paly v.100- that's a sweet looking dash you have there.

Well, yesterday I purchased a Pioneer 3400 UB head unit (CD stereo)
and a pair of 6x9 Kicker speakers. The person at Best Buy was trying to talk me into getting a separate amp, which I might do after I see how this sounds. So I mounted the speakers in the package tray, now I have to think of how I am gonna mount the stereo under the dash. Should I re-install the three vent factory unit first (factory AC car)? attach to that?

What should I use as a "box for the radio to go in?

I had a Pioneer super tuner under my dash and the quality sucked, went with a Phillips. Mounted 2 4" rounds in the factory dash speaker location and 6X9's in the rear.
