What's the deal with champion?

-
Unless you are running a Briggs & Stratton forget Champion! NGK is the way to go. I wouldn't flush Bosch plugs down my enemy's toilet. They don't work well in anything made outside europe.

Yeah, I'll agree there, any Champion in any of our cars just plain suck. They seem to make the engine lose power after about a week.:banghead:

Another tid bit is, if so desired you could put E3s in a lawn mower lmao

I went to the local Advance Auto Parts for some plugs. I was thinking I could try some E3s or Champions. I asked the lady at the counter if she had any plugs for a 1970 Dart "3.7" so I get a list, go through it and so on and so forth I say how about the Champions? and She tells me we don't stock them anymore. No one does anymore, if you want them it will have to be a factory order.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has heard of this or experienced this

I ran into the same thing at an advance auto parts.
I was told the same thing, but they seem to have plenty of car wax.
Well, not having Champion plugs, cost them $400.00 dollars.
Along with the spark plugs for my wifes 300C (takes 16), I also needed front rotors, disc pads, air & oil filter.
I'm sure they could care less, but NAPA had everything I needed.
It must be a conflict between Champion & advance.

Hmmm, both parts stores around town here carry Champion plugs. Maybe the place you go to caters to the ricer crowd, LMAO.

I live in Gurnee, IL - the town just east of us that is on Lake Michigan is called Waukegan. Waukegan was a town that had its glory days in 1958. Walk-town as the "caucasian" locals sometime refer to it as is like a slice of Mexico here in 2012. It's been that way for 25-30 years now. Any Illinoisian that's been up this way will tell you the same.

Long story short, your correct.

Whats the deal with Champions ?

Unfortunately they suck.......

NGK's & Autolites in that order.

NGK's in everything- stock (iridiums) in my SC Buick, put them in everything else for the last 20 years by the advice of a mechanic I respect to no end

Boy, I am lost... You were the one complaining about not being able to buy Champions that started this thread.

With a carb they gotta be changed every 12,000 miles, what is the point in paying for an expensive bogus spark plug like E3 or the such? Champions do suck, but they're better than the "crap".

Maybe I need some NOS Chrysler brand plugs:D

you can run autolite 65's or 66's...

the 65's are stock street hemi and small blocks...

These work pretty well in a race application (not for street use).

But with the kids and recession, my budget isn't what it used to be.

I use Autolite 3924s to good effect in my car but I run Magnum style heads. They might be different than X,J, etc.

Never had a problem with NGKs either. I really like the way they work with nitrous. They seem to be easier to read than Autolites. Not sure why I went back to Autolites when I went Mopar, but whatever.

i heard with the autolites the thread are what you read... they change colors lol

Just because one spark plug cross references to another, doesn't mean it is the same.
Go to an application guide for the proper plug, no matter the manufacture.
Now when it comes to a modified engine, its a trial & error deal, no matter the plug MFG.
You made reference to a "MOPAR" plug, well the "MOPAR" plug was made by Champion for ever.
Now, the OEM plug from Chrysler Corp is Champions. Champion's are also referenced in the owners manual.
I have ran Autolites with no concerns, but prefer Champions in all my rolling stock & Racecars, thats the Mopar guy in me.
I go a full season on the Champions in the race car & we race almost every weekend somewhere.
The bottom line is, when it comes to sparkplug choice, get the correct one for the application. No matter what brand it is!

Agreed on the last part

I've never had bad luck with any plug and I've used them all at one time or another.

X2

In my 40+ years of driving I have used every brand and have never been able to distinguish any difference from one to another.

From what I was told- Advance is just phasing out most Champions. They wont get rid of something unless there is a problem or not selling enough. With all the newer cars now a days calling for NGK's, Bosch, etc-well......
And I work at Advance Auto, and no- I cant get you my discount lol

Why run the spark plugs with the washer rings removed? Do they get stuck or does it help a little with compression?

I run NGK plugs in both of my 340 engines.

That's applicable only to slant-6 heads made between '63 and '74, see here. In that application if you leave the ring washers on the plugs run hotter than they should.
