Does anyone know offhand what length rear end fits a stock Plymouth Barracuda with unmodified wheel wells? I have a stock 8.25 from a 1973 Dart 340 car. It has the large bolt pattern and I moved the springs in about .8" to get more tire room. Do I need to change my length from stock to get the maximum amount of tire? Rear is about 56" now ( stock dart a body ). Can I get 255/60/15's on back, or more? Has anyone with a stock 1968 barracuda done the work to figure this out. Just trying to save myself some time.

figure out which wheel centers the tire in your wheelwell. Buy wheels with the correct backspacing.

I would be more concerned about the width instead of the length...

Thanks for the easy answers. If you don't know just say so. If the rear end is the wrong length, it doesn't make any differance which wheels you use. Like I said- just trying to save myself some time. I know how to get the right measurements, it just takes time. Width, length, all the same I need the distance from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface.

He's just saying that even if the axle is the "incorrect" (longer or shorter) length, you can still use a wheel with a different backspacing to move the wheel centerline in or out depending on what you need. Nobody's trying to be a dick, we usually try and help each other...relax.

OK, you can can the attitude any damn time, and believe me, you are not makin any friends here. If you stack up all the A bodies over the years, not all of 'em have the same axle width!!!!

And you !!!CAN!!! use "the wrong" width axle, as long as you can compensate with wheel offset.

In my own case, I'm using a Ferd Versaille 9" axle, which is a little bit wider than the 7 1/4 which came out. I had an 8 1/4 out of a 73-74, and it was a little different than the old 7 1/4 For the moment, I'm running temporary wheels on the rear off a Cherokee. This is simply until I get the disc brake front end under, and get all 4 as I want.

Something to ponder.

You have a 10" wide wheel, backspace on one set is 3" and the other is 8".

The rear end that will properly center those two different wheels is only 10" total difference... Almost 1 full foot. So the correct answer to the original question is...

Don't know!

Which gets back to my first response, depends on the wheels.

Had you asked what factory lengths were, that's a different question and easy to answer.

Thanks, I just felt like I was being blown off by pat answers. These are the kind of answers I wanted to hear. I have this great 8.25 rear end that I spent big bucks on and I'm not sure what wheels and axel combo to put together. The answer is get down and measure it! I have an 8.75 489? rear that I want to build but I don't know what to tell the machine shop to make it for length. I have a friend that has a built axel housing shortened and stiffened, with Dutchman axels for the 8.75, but think they are too short for my car. They measure only 51.375" from mounting face to mounting face. I think my stock 8.25 is about 56.5"? Trying to remember from last year. I used to have a better memory for these things - Must be OLDTIMERS! LOL. I want to get some wheels but I don't have the money to throw arround to make a mistake and buy something I can't use. Well, as we said at the shop, measure three times, cut once! Thanks again for the answers. I don't mean to offend anyone. My sincere appologies to all.

Never knew this. Thought all a,s were the same regardless which size and only b,s were different.
